A Song for Prashant Tamang "Yo Man ta Mero Nepali Ho"

आइलाग्ने शत्रुको म गछु'काम तमाम...।
Kathmandu,September29:
In a voice choked with emotion, Prashanta today sang a long forgotten song by the Nepalese in front of the Nepal PM. The prime minister too appeared overwhelmed with joy with what an Indian boy of Nepali origin at 24 accomplished and offered him as a mark of honor a black “Nepali Cap with Crossed Khukuri”-the symbol of Nepali valor and courage. The atmosphere was sentimental at time when the two met each other.
According to reports, the NTB will make a humble request to him to be the brand ambassador for Nepal’s tourism.
“Prashant will be given the State honors as well”, say reports further.
“The PM himself has shown keen interest in meeting the Darjeeling lad of Nepali origin”, say officials at the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil aviation.
Prashant who arrived in Nepal today is all set to meet Nepal’s Prime Minster Girija Prasad Koirala. During his stay in Nepal, he will perform in Kathmandu on 29th September and in Pokhara on 30th September, 07.
During his show, Prashant is to sing a Nepali Song which recalls the glorious past of the Nepalese-Yo Man ta Mero Nepali Ho- literally the song means “After all my heart is Nepali”.
The same day he is leaving Kathmandu for Delhi.
Amongst the seven crores of the total votes polled during the finals of the Indian Idol sponsored by India’s SONY Television Channel, Prashant received more than sixty-five percent, say reports.

TEEJ FESTIVAL CELEBRATED IN SIKKIM

Teej is an annual festival of Nepali women. The festival is celebrated with utmost dedication and love by the women in Sikkim. Preparations for the festival begin well in advance. Fabric stores, sarees and suit outlets are stocked with the bridal red color fabric. Women spend most of the time shopping when Teej is near.
Teej festival celebrations are carried further with sumptuous feasts and traditional performances. On this day, women dress up beautifully. They clad themselves in red colored apparels, wear glass bangles, heavy ornaments and apply henna. Teej gives women an opportunity to dress like the newly wed. They worship the epitome of divine marriage - Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, for longevity and prosperity for their husband and family.

Teej is a three-day-long festival for Nepali women folks and each day has its own significance.
1. First day is called 'Dar Khane Din', the day to make merry.
2. Second day is a 'fasting day'.
3. The third day is called 'Rishi Panchami' in Nepal which is a day to
perform Teej Puja.
Dar Khane Din
The first day of Teej in Sikkim is called the 'Dar Khane Din'. On this day, the womenfolk dressed in the finest clothed gather at one place and perform traditional dance and sing devotional songs. A special food called 'dar' is eaten. Celebrations continue till midnight after which the 24-hour-long fast begins.
Fasting Day
The second or the fasting day of the Teej festival is dedicated to pujas and prayers. The holy Sarsawati Mandir in Tadong is thronged by women in red sarees to offer prayers to Lord Shiva. Women gather in the temple and circumambulate the Lingam (phallic symbol of the Lord) adorned with flowers, sweets and coins. The beautifully decorated idols of Shiva and Parvati are offered fruits and flowers to seek blessings of the divine spirits. Lighting of an oil lamp is very important part of the puja ceremony. It is said that the oil lamp should be kept lit all night to avoid bad omen.
Rishi Panchami
The third day of the Teej Festival is called Rishi Panchami. On this day, the seven sages of the Hindu pantheon are worshiped by women in a belief that it will cleanse all sins of the previous year. Womenfolk take a holy bath with red mud found on the roots of the sacred Datiwan bush, along with its leaves. After three hours of rigorous cleansing, they come out purified and absolved from all sins. After this they sit in a semicircle while a priest sitting in the middle chants devotional prayers.

In memory of Gopal Yonzon

The daylong programme at Town Hall was organised by Raageshree Kala Niketan — a music school here.
Singers Ajneesh Rai from Darjeeling, Banika Pradhan from Kurseong, Bhanu Ramudamu and Bimla Cintury from Gangtok, Safal Thapa and Nila Mani Thapa from Siliguri and Thupden Bhutia from Kalimpong rendered compositions by Yonzon.
Besides the musicians, hundreds of fans from different parts of the hills came to pay their tribute to the master who died in 1997.
The composer, who provided music for various Nepali films, including the blockbuster Kanchi, was also known. It was Yonzon who played the flute for the scores in Satyajit Ray’s Kanchanjangha.
“Yonzon was a genius. There will never be a lyricist and composer like him. We are all gathered here to celebrate his music and remember his creations,” said Bipin Syangden, a celebrated lyricist himself.
Yogendra Ghatani, the director of Raageshree, said his organisation had plans of celebrating Yonzon’s birth anniversary on a similar scale every year.
The other celebrity singers present on the occasion were Gagan Gurung, Madhusudan Lama, Daisy Bareily and Yonzon’s elder brother Karma.
“The first break for Gopal came when his school’s bandmaster heard him play the flute and asked him to join the band. He was very sentimental and short-tempered. A great deal of credit for his success goes to his wife Tinchen,” Karma said.
Though Yonzon was born in Darjeeling, he earned his spurs in the erstwhile hill kingdom of Nepal. Composer of such immortal tunes like Timro jasto mutu mero pani and Chyangba hoi chyangba, he and singer Narayan Gopal completely dominated modern Nepali music in the seventies and eighties.
