Sikkim Government urges to withdraw the hunger strike soon


Gangtok:The Government of Sikkim has urged the Aggrieved Citizens of Teesa(Act) to withhold the hunger strike forthwith in the interest of the people because all the pros and cons were examined before taking up the project, a press statement by IPR Department says. The project is necessary to make Sikkim a self reliant state, the press statement further states. There is enormous potentiality in the rich natural state Sikkim and it is estimated that about 8000 M.W. power can be generated, therefore the Government has taken the project, it is stated in the press release. The Government has taken effort to remove some of t he doubts raised by the concerned people and the works will be given to the local, the press statement further states.
Earlier, the Government of Sikkim expressed serious concern over the two hours blockade at Melli, West Bengal side on July 10 by Lepcha organization of Kalimpong in support of the hunger strike being observed by Aggrieved Citizens of Teesa(Act) in protest of the Teesta hydel project to be implemented at Dzongu. The State Government has taken up the matter to West Bengal Government which is termed as unlawful by Sikkim Government. Since, Sikkim is a strategic border state, it is paramount duty to open the National Highway for the movement both for the civil and military purposes. In a press release, it is stated that due to such sudden blockade, many tourists and other passengers had to suffer a lot.
The indefinite hunger strike by Affected Citizen of Teesta(ACT) enters 25days on July 14 and the standoff between the State Government and ACT continued despite the effort to settle the matter after two rounds of talks.
