GANGTOK GROOM ARRTESTED FOR DOWRY DEMAND

Gangtok: it is not often that one hears of dowry cases in sikkim and when one did came along ,a Gangtok lad accused of making dowry demands was arrested on the basis of an FIR filed in Siliguri police station.

Mukesh of Gangtok was arrested late on the night of 15th May following a complaint filed by his day old wife accusing him and his family of demanding Rs.10 lakhs as dowry. The girl Anupama Agarwal of Jalpaiguri went all by herself to siliguri thana to file the complaint.

Mukesh along with his brother were arrested while their father is absconding.The family has a shop at MG Marg, Gangtok.
The couple was formally engaged about 6 months agoand the marriage ceremony took place in siliguri on the night of 14th May, it was on following day when the bride was waiting for groom to come to get her that the drama reportedly began. According to custom,the groom comes to bride's house to take her away while Anupama waited for hours at the Marriage Hall but groom failed to turn up. and reportedly, there was subtle pressure being applied to extract money from bride's family.Sources add that to give his refusal to take bride a decent excuse,Mukesh allegedly claimed that bride had a black-mark on her back which was inauspicious.The girl's family tried their best to dissuade him to the extent that their family doctor and ward commissioner were also called to speak in their support.when finally it became obvious that it was money to the tune of Rs.10 lakhs that was actually being demanded. Anupama carried herself to the Police Station and filed the complaint and all action followed as reported above.
