Ugen Gurung of Sikkim to participate in 6th World Taekwondo Poomsea Championship,Vladivostok in Russia

Gangtok, July 25 (PTI) 17-year-old Ugen Gurung of Sikkim is part of the five member Indian team which will participate in the 6th World Taekwondo Poomsea Championship scheduled to be held at Vladivostok in Russia from July 29-31. Ugen told reporters here before his departure that the Vladivostok tournament was also a selection event for the Olympics. The top-16 from this championship will qualify for Olympic trials scheduled to be held in London later this year. In his last international tournament, the World Taekwondo Championship held in Korea in December last year, Ugen had made it to the semifinals and has also participated in the 5th World Taekwondo Poomsea Championship held in Uzbekistan last year. He won gold at the 3rd Commonwealth Poomsea Championship earlier this year. The Sikkim Amateur Taekwondo Association (SATA) hosted a short function yesterday to send off Ugen with the best wishes of the organization and all martial artists of the state. The SATA president, YB Thapa said that it was a proud moment that a boy from a small state like Sikkim has been selected to represent India.

Trilok Subba wins Gold Medal in 6th CK Classic Malaysian Open International Championship

Gangtok, July, 18 Trilok Subba has made the State proud by winning a Gold Medal in the 6th CK Classic Malaysian Open International Championship in the first master Taekwondo poomsae category on the 15th-17th July 2011. The Silver medal went to Aday Margulan of Kazakhstan and bronze was won by Karuna Rathna of Sri Lanka. Out of 11 Indian Team Contingent Trilok won Single Gold Medal for India.

The championship was organized by Malaysia Taekwando Federation from 15th to 18th of July 2011. The countries that participated were Malaysia, Korea, Kazakhstan, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, Iran, India, Pakistan, Myanmar etc. A total of 600 male and female sub junior, junior, senior and master contestants took part in this championship. Mr Subba has expressed his happiness for winning Gold Medal for India in this mega championship and was also happy that his hard work had finally paid.

Gangtok: 15th July: The lone participant of Sikkim Amateur Taekwondo Association (SATA) Mr. Trilok Subba (6th Dan, Black Belt) recently left the state to represent India in the “6th CK Malaysia Classic International Taekwondo Championship (MCITC) -2011 at Kualalampur, Malaysia which is being played from 15th July to 17th of July 2011.There was total of 13 countries including India has taken part in the 3 day long championship at Malaysia. Joint Secretary of SATA, Mr. Rajen Subba said that, as this is not the first time as Mr. Trilok Subba had left for the battle but every time he has been performing well in all the tournaments association.

Adding further he also added that, the association would like to express their gratitude to the Sports department for every help that they have been giving to the sportsmen.

Sikkim Taekwondo Inter-Dojang Championship 2011 held @ Gangtok

Gangtok: 29th May: Secretary, Sports Department, Mr. Karma P Bhutia assured of promoting Sikkim Amateur Taekwondo Association (SATA) in the long term, today here in the daylong event “Inter Dojang Taekwondo Championship 2011” held at Paljor Stadium, Gymnasium Hall, Gangtok organized by Sikkim Amateur Taekwondo Association (SATA).
Sports Secretary also mentioned that the effort put by the association is an example for everyone to follow. SATA has achieved their goal within a short period and has placed themselves in the number one position in sports played in state and their efforts has immense recognized Sikkim state across the globe, added Secretary.
“I would like to see that our State represents the Indian team in the up coming Asian Games” stated Secretary and added that ‘I wish the journey gets fruitful and would come out with flying colors’.
Total of 80 players both boys and girls from four districts participated from MCM Dojang Whitehall, Namchi Taekwondo Dojang, Daffodil School Gangtok, Tashi Namgyal Academy; Tadong Senior Secondary School including JDS Memorial Taekwondo Dojang Kalimpong.

The competition started by 9am and ended around 3pm. Sub-Junior, juniors, seniors and Master were the four categories under which the competition took place. MCM Dojang Whitehall, Gangtok was placed in 1st position in the team championship, 2nd position was occupied by Namchi Taekwondo Dojang and the 3rd position by Daffodil School, Gangtok during the day long event today.
During the competition, Chief State Coach of SATA, Mr. Trilok Subba said that, the main idea of conducting the competition is to hunt and promote the young budding players of the Sikkim.

Sikkim Team heads for first India Open International Taekwondo Championship

Gangtok, Sept. 20: A 15-member team from Sikkim left today for Visakhapatnam for the first India Open International Taekwondo Championship that will have 50 participating countries.

The group selected by the Sikkim Amateur Taekwondo Association will take part in the event that is to be held from September 22 to 24.

“The meet is being organised by the Indian Taekwondo Federation and is one of the six major tournaments sanctioned by the World Taekwondo Federation. Participants from 50 countries will be featuring in this event and it is a great opportunity for our players to represent the nation in such a prestigious tournament,” said chief coach of the Sikkim association, Trilok Subba.

The players have been selected from the state-level tournaments held earlier this month at the Paljor Stadium.

Subba said only black belts who have won medals at the national-level are allowed to participate in the international tournament at Visakhapatnam.

Subba admitted that winning medals at the event would not be an easy task.

“To win medals would be tough as there would be a large number of contestants in each weight group. We do expect some medals but it is not going to be easy. We have our hopes pinned on experienced international players like Sabina Sundas and Umesh Tamang,” he said.

Sabina had represented the country in the South Asian Games at Dhaka in 2009 while Umesh had participated in the World Taekwondo Championship in China in 2007.

Sabina, who will take part in the 46kg weight category, is confident about her performance.

“This is my second international tournament and I have prepared well with help from my coaches. I want to make my country and state proud by winning a medal,” she said.

The group is accompanied by coaches Sanjay Subba and Tamas Shetty along with team manager Bijoy Gurung.

Sikkim Taekwondo medalists congratulated

Gangtok,Nov19 : 1 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals were won recently by the players of Sikkim State Taekwondo Association from 29th Junior National Taekwondo Championship at Harayana. A 14-member team won the six medals. Sabina Sundas won gold in below 42 weight categories. Silver medalists are Phurba Sherpa, Suman Tamang and Parmashwar Burathoki and bronze medalist are Sushil Lepcha and Bhuwan Prashed Limbu.
Executive members of the Association congratulated the medalists on Tuesday at conference hall of Paljor Stadium. 25th National Taekwondo Championships

Lucknow, July 31 The stage is all set for the 25th National Taekwondo Championships to be organised at the badminton hall of 35th Battalion PAC, Mahanagar from August 2 to 4. The three-day event is being organised by the Jimmy R Jagtiani led Taekwondo Federation of India (TFI) and co-organised by Javed Taekwondo Academy. The National Referee/Instructor Course and Black belt examination will also be held at the same venue during the championships.
Addressing mediapersons secretary general TFI Jimmy R Jagtiani informed that India will celebrate the 31st anniversary of Taekwondo and Taekwondo Federation of India on August 2 followed by the silver jubilee of 25th National Taekwondo Championships in which 28 teams comprising of 900 players and officials from all over India are expected to take part. Competitions will be organised in male and female senior, junior & sub-junior boys’ and girls’ section. The taekwondoists will be competing in 8 weight categories in the senior and 11 weight categories in the junior and sub-junior section.

Teams from about 24 states/union territories have confirmed their participation in the tournament. They include—- Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chandigarh, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Manipur, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Orissa, Punjab, Pondicherry, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Uttaranchal and hosts Uttar Pradesh.
“Second of August assumes greater significance in view of the fact that it will be the 31st Anniversary of Taekwondo Federation of India and Taekwondo in India on August 2, 1976,” he said.
Jimmy R Jagtiani, who also happens to be the leading pioneer of Taekwondo in India expressed satisfaction at the rapidly increasing popularity of the sport in the country. He said that things have really start moving in the sport of taekwondo in India. “It is very encouraging to realise that with barely 50 members in 1976, it has now multiplied to more than 1,50,000 members all over the country.” He hoped that one day, it will have a fan following like cricket.
