The Criticisms of Sikkim Football Association are unjustified: Tempo Bhutia

GANGTOK, September 14: The Sikkim Football Association (SFA) has seen bigger tournaments with fatter sponsors beat the dust, adjusted relocation to an unfeasible venue for three years, witnessed Bhaichung Bhutia exploding in the national football circuit, saluted the champions and wished gallant losers better luck next time, all these while overcoming bottlenecks during its long journey of hosting All India Governor’s Gold Cup football tournament uninterruptedly for the 31st consecutive years.

Having seen it all, it appears that there is still something that SFA cannot overcome- being picked up by certain quarters every year over a couple of ‘ceiling glass’ issues.

Exasperated with complaints, SFA president Tempo Bhutia today came out in full boots to tackle the allegations levelled on the association that has hosted the showpiece event of the Northeastern region without any major controversies or hiccups for the past three decades.

Some people say that there are no quality teams in the tournament but do they know the quality of Tata Football Academy (TFA) and Chirag United?, countered Mr. Bhutia to the one constant slur levelled on SFA.
For the uninformed, TFA has been making a habit of trashing East Bengal and other big clubs while Chirag United plays in the first division of the Indian Football League.
Defending champions Three Star, Nepal need no introduction while a full fledged Nigerian club this time is what everyone here is awaiting.
We also brought a Goan team this time keeping in view of the demands of the people, said Mr. Bhutia.
They say that spectators are dying out due to lack of quality teams. While it is true that people have come out in less numbers in the initial matches, those making such comments have themselves not seen the matches, said the SFA president.

It may be added here football lovers of Sikkim do really rouse up to the Gold Cup football fest right from the word go but gradually warm up to the matches and pack up the stadium toe to toe in the later stages of the tournament to catch the action.

Same script was repeated in this tournament with lukewarm response till the pre-quarter round completed and crowds are expected to swell up tomorrow to support TFA and on September 17, a full house is expected to watch defending champions Three Star Nepal.

The SFA president went back to history to really underline the importance of Governor’s Gold Cup and its great survival while other similar premier tournaments faded out.

One of the premier football tournaments in the country, DCM Cup was discontinued from 1998, the year SFA hosted the 20th All India Governor’s Gold Cup.

While SFA tenaciously gave continuity to the Governor’s Gold Cup despite constant upheavals in the football sector of the nation, other premier tournaments like Rover Cup, Kalinga Cup, Mittal Cup and many others could not sustain themselves when the Indian football circuit morphed itself into premier league, State leagues and preference for only few selected tournaments like IFA Shield and Durand Cup.

As invitational tournaments lost their sheen due to non participation of big clubs, SFA was also caught in the same threatening zone with big clubs Mohan Bagan and East Bengal skipping the Gold Cup due to AIFF and league entanglements.

Both Mohan Bagan and East Bengal have won the Gold Cup several times in the dusty battleground of Polo ground while leading teams from various parts of India have been participating in this tourney at various years.

Earlier, there used be at least a dozen all India level football tournaments which now have been discontinued but SFA has been successful in giving continuity to the Governor’s Gold Cup, said Mr. Bhutia. Big States with larger sponsorship have discontinued the tournaments while Sikkim being a smaller State is still attracting good teams for the Governor’s Gold Cup, he added.

All the big teams people talk about are committed to nine months of active football in the I-league and to get these teams is very difficult and expensive as these teams have to I-league, AFC and local league commitments, it was explained.

Regarding the ‘turf’ debate, the SFA president simply pointed out that FIFA has already proposed eight artificial football grounds in India and Sikkim is also included the proposed States.

Mr. Bhutia also said that it is unjustified that issue of non-football players being in SFA is always raised. It is not justified to raise such issues as administration and playing are different.

The examples of BCCI and AIFF were also pointed out.

Gangtok,Sep14 : The George Telegraph Institue Football team from Kolkatta became first team to enter semi-finals by beating Goan first division outfit Faria Strikers by scoring 2-1 in the famed 31st Sikkim Governor's Gold Cup in Gangtok.
Despite losing its key player Swapan Mandi to a red card in the first half, ten men George Telegraph team preserved its one goal lead to defeat Goan club Faria Strikers 2-1 in the last pre-match of the 31st All India Governor’s Gold Cup football tournament today here at Paljor Stadium.

Striker Mandi was earned a double booking to receive the marching orders from the referee in the 32nd minute leaving George Telegraph with only ten men.Ironically, Mandi had scored the winning goal one minute before he received the red card and both George Telegraph and Faria Strikers were locked in a 1-1 draw. The Goan club management deputed a 22-member team for the Sikkim tourney with Mizoram's Benjamin being the chief coach. Mervin Telles is the manager, Roselin the physiotherapist and Chandu Naik being the goalkeeper coach.Among the main players, Faria Strikers have roped in five players from Mizoram, two from Pune FC and one former Mohammedan Sporting Club player from Calcutta. Local Goan talent also represented their line-up.

Earlier, the Goan side had taken the lead in the 3rd minute when C Zothansanga scored off a rebound. This was his fourth goal in the tournament. The Goan’s side lead was shortlived as George Telegraph midfielder Pintu Prasad’s fierce shot from the edge of the box crashed into the Faria Striker’s net in the 18th minute. After losing a player to the red card, the George Telegraph played possession football in the second half and preserved its one goal advantage till the final whistle.

Denzong Boys outplay Royal Rangers

GANGTOK, September 8: Charlton Chapman coached Royal Rangers slipped out of the 31st All India Governor’s Gold Cup football tournament while local team Denzong Boys slithered into the pre-quarters with a 2-0 win.

Dry cleaners in the town should be raising their eyebrows as the players marched off the pitch after the final whistle soiled with dark mud paste from their studs to their hair.

Free flowing game was also disrupted as the ball got struck around some slushy patches near the midfield of the pitch forcing the players to go for the air option. It was one such wicked cross from right winger Dinesh Thapa which was sneaked into the net by captain KC Dadul for the first goal to Denzong Boys in the 11th minute.

As players slipped, slithered and sunk into the slushy patches of the field, scoring opportunities for the Delhi team were very few which was easily bundled out by the Denzong defense.

Nigerian Tarus T Manneah of Denzong Boys livened up the drab game in the second half with his gazelle gallops, stepovers, flicks and other forms of showmanship. His showmanship hit a high after he consolidated the lead with a quality finish in the 62nd minute.
Having collected the ball from outside the box, Manneh swiftly dismissed two defenders and sent the Royal Rangers goalie towards Ranka while lobbing the ball into the opposite side with the outside of his right boot for his second goal of the tournament.
Manneh could have added another goal but his fierce shot rebounded off the post.
With today’s easy victory, Denzong Boys has entered the pre-quarters of the tournament and faces a strong Punjab Police side on September 11.

Sikkim Police& Denzong Boys move forward in Gold Cup

GANGTOK, September 5: Denzong Boys and Sikkim Police entered the qualifying round to the main draw of the 31st All India Governor’s Gold Cup football tournament which kicked off from today here at Paljor Stadium.
In the first match, Denzong Boys motorized by three Nigerians and other imported players overpowered United Sikkim Sporting Club (USSC) by three goals to one.
The Denzong Boys drew an early first blood in the 6th minute when midfielder Dipesh Thapa slammed home a loose ball into the net from the box. Central forward Krishna consolidated the advantage when he scored the second goal for Denzong Boys in the 23rd minute.
In the 32nd minute, Nigerian Taurus P Manneh rounded the USSC goalkeeper to make it 3 goals for Denzong Boys before the lemon break.
Eze Collins scored the consolation goal for USSC in the final few minutes of the game. Free flowing football was much hampered by heavy downpour.
With this victory in the pre-qualify round, Denzong Boys has entered the qualifying round of the Gold Cup where it will meet Royal Rangers, Delhi on September 7.
In the second match, the experience of Sikkim Police prevailed over the youthful exuberance of Sports Academy Sikkim as the police team won the match 2 goals to 1.
Suman Dewan scored the first goal for Sikkim Police in the 2nd minute of the game. The lead was secured by Lokbir Lamichaney in the 22nd minute.
Biden Rai scored the consolation goal for Sports Academy in the 89th minute.

Sikkim Governor’s Gold Cup kick-off from Sept 5

Gold Cup Photo AlbumGANGTOK, August 31: The 2009 edition of the Governor’s Gold Cup has got bigger, better and offers more variety with participation of clubs from African football powerhouse Nigeria, eternal favourite Nepal, ‘never-say-die’ Bhutan, football capital Goa, former football capital Kolkata and ‘you love them-you hate them’ Tata Football Academy.
Of course, five of our very own local clubs will be rubbing shoulders with the Big Boys and hopefully, slay a few giants during the 31st All India Governor’s Gold Cup Football Tournament conducted by Sikkim Football Association (SFA).
This premier tournament of the Northeastern region kicks off from September 5 here at Paljor Stadium with eight unseeded teams battling for the two spots in the main draw before the tournament opens its doors for main course.
In a bid to encourage and promote local talents, SFA has given the opportunity to Denzong Boys, Dzongri Club, United Sikkim Sporting Club, Sikkim Sports Academy and Sikkim Police to participate in the tournament. These clubs will be playing a sort of pre-qualifiers against Independence Day football tournament champions Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), untested Dehradun XI and Eastern Railways on the first few days of the tournament.
And then comes the heavy artillery.
For the first time, a full fledged Nigerian team is participating in the tournament which should be enough to ensure a House Full at the 20,000 seater Paljor Stadium. The team, Covenant Sporting Club is from Lagos, the capital of Nigeria and it can be stressed here the players are not ‘freelancers’ Nigerian players we have seen in the past two editions of the Governor’s Club.
On paper, it should be a delusion to hand over the silverware to the Nigerian club as the defending champions, Three Star from Nepal is ready to do an encore.
Leading the Indian challenge is Faria Strikers from Goa. The club is the Goa league champions and its participation will be a maiden debut of a Goan club in Gold Cup.
Not to be left behind is Tata Football Academy, the production house of Indian footballers.
Four clubs will be representing Kolkata in the tournament. They are Chirag United, BNR, Calcutta Port Trust and George Telegraph. From the far west, Mumbai United FC has also thrown its hat in the ring. The presence of Charlton Chapman coached Royal Rangers from New Delhi and strong Punjab Police football team completes an all round national participation in the tournament.
September 22, two days before the Dasai festival, will decide which challengers will lift the coveted cup ending 19 days of football festivities here at Paljor Stadium.
“SFA takes pride in roping in the above clubs to play in this tournament despite the fact that IFA Shield, Durand Cup, Bordolia Cup as well as I-League matches are being held at the same time”, said SFA general secretary Menla Ethanpa in a press meet here today. He pointed out that the Governor’s Gold Cup is on the few tournaments of the country which is being organized uninterruptedly for the last thirty years.
Altogether twenty teams are featuring in the 31st All India Governor’s Gold Cup Football Tournament, said Mr. Ethanpa.
SFA working president BK Roka, publicity secretary Shyam Pradhan, vice president OP Singhi and vice president Karma Sonam Gyatso also addressed the press meet.
Governor Balmiki Singh Prasad will be declaring the tournament officially open on September 9 while Chief Minister Pawan Chamling has been invited as the guest of honour on the occasion.
