The Wai Wai Sikkim unit whose factory is located at Rangpo provided a financial sponsorship of Rs. 3 lakhs to the Denzong Boys.
The company marketing manager Debashis Chakraborty and PRO Sherap Lepcha today handed a cheque of Rs. 3 lakhs to Purba Sherpa, president of Denzong Welfare Association which runs the Denzong Boys football club.
The Denzong Boys football club has reached the quarterfinals of 31st All India Governor’s Gold Cup football tournament being played here at Paljor Stadium. The team faces Chirag United in the quarterfinal match tomorrow.
The Denzong Boys had also reached the finals of the State level Independence Day football tournament last month.
The team’s star player, Taurus Manneuh sported the first team jersey with the Wai Wai logo.
Mr. Lepcha said the Wai Wai company sponsorship to Denzong Boys is of one year duration and the team has to wear the company’s logo printed jerseys in all the matches the players for one year.
The sponsorship was a result of the desire of the company’s president cum managing director Binod K Chowdhary that youth should come forward in sports and stay away negative habits, said Mr. Lepcha. He also thanked the Chief Minister’s Political Advisor Hissey Lachungpa for his interest in promoting sports and football and taking up initiative for the sponsorship to the Denzong team.
Denzong Welfare Association president Purba Sherpa thanked both Wai Wai company and Mr. Lachungpa for encouraging the local team.
The other executive members of the association, Sonam Choppel Bhutia (vice president), Chewang Jigmee Lachungpa (general secretary), Sonam Gurung (sports secretary) and Karma Tashi (treasurer) were also present during the cheque handing function organized at a local hotel here in Gangtok.
