Gangtok,Sep14 : The George Telegraph Institue Football team from Kolkatta became first team to enter semi-finals by beating Goan first division outfit Faria Strikers by scoring 2-1 in the famed 31st Sikkim Governor's Gold Cup in Gangtok.
Despite losing its key player Swapan Mandi to a red card in the first half, ten men George Telegraph team preserved its one goal lead to defeat Goan club Faria Strikers 2-1 in the last pre-match of the 31st All India Governor’s Gold Cup football tournament today here at Paljor Stadium.
Striker Mandi was earned a double booking to receive the marching orders from the referee in the 32nd minute leaving George Telegraph with only ten men.Ironically, Mandi had scored the winning goal one minute before he received the red card and both George Telegraph and Faria Strikers were locked in a 1-1 draw. Earlier, the Goan side had taken the lead in the 3rd minute when C Zothansanga scored off a rebound. This was his fourth goal in the tournament. The Goan’s side lead was shortlived as George Telegraph midfielder Pintu Prasad’s fierce shot from the edge of the box crashed into the Faria Striker’s net in the 18th minute. After losing a player to the red card, the George Telegraph played possession football in the second half and preserved its one goal advantage till the final whistle.
