WEST SIKKIM FACES HEAVY RAINFALL, ROAD LINKS DISRUPTED


Namchi, September 13: Heavy rainfall in the past one weak caused extensive damages across the West District which resulted in disruption of road connectivity as well as damages to houses and standing properties. The road formation has been damaged at several places between Gyalshing-Naya Bazar road. Around 90mts. of Roads length has been washed away at Sisney in Nayabazar which will take at least 10 days to restore the traffic.Another major landslide at Bojek has washed away the road connecting Nayabazar-Daramdin Road. Further, the road connectivity between Reshi-Rinchepong, Gyalshing-Tashiding, Pelling-Dentam road is not available. Nayabazar-Soreng road is in precarious condition. The Secretary Roads & Bridges, Govind Sharma along with DLRC (West) inspected the affected areas on 9th September and the Secretary has instructed Superintendent Engineer- in- charge of Roads (West) to take immediate action to open the blocked road.It has also been reported by Superintendent Engineer, Energy & Power Department that three nos. of 66 kv tower below Kamrang has been totally damaged due to the landslide on10th September evening resulting in irregular power supply to West District and will take at least a week to restore normal supply.According to DC West there is no storage of essential commodities in the West District at present excepting fuel. The situation is being monitored, however it is anticipated that within next few days if the road is not restored, there can be crisis of essential commodities particularly petrol, Diesel and LPG.
