SDF GOVT.: SIKKIM AND ITS PEOPLE TASTES FULLNESS OF DEMOCRACY IN ALL SPHERE.
Gangtok: In a reaction to news articles and editorial appearing in local newspapers especially in vernacular publications on subject that Sikkim needs restoration of democracy and where is democracy etc. views of SDF Government were put forward through a release which reflects a stand on issue which is lately being raised at all platforms by United opposition parties:
A statement issued to media by Sikkim Democratic Front Government has ridiculed the demand of Opposition Political Parties for restoration of their democratic rights in state is nothing but a baseless charge and issue which leaders of Opposition parties trying to make-out in their apparent failure to have any political or other issue against the Sikkim Democratic Front government and its rule. Their baseless demands are nothing but a futile attempt to find some issue to get some political mileage and attention. Thestate government 'scondemnationof agencies which question the existence of democracy in Sikkim and release by IPR also explained why the hydel option is being explored so agressssively. It adds that the editorial "where is democracy (inSikkim)?" featured in a local vernacular newspaper which doesnot hesitate to critize the Government at the drop of hat and wildest of allegations without a shread of evidence has failed to see democracy in Sikkim,"the IPR release counters explaining thatvery fact that the said newspaper has written such an editorial was 'in itself reflective of the democratic values always upheld by the present ruling governmnet.' "Democracy,for the information of above newspaper,not only exists but reigns supreme" the press release states.
According to the release, media can play an important role in forming public opinion but this role has to be played in the rightful and useful manner. To irresponsibly state without any solid evidence that administration, employees and Ministers are not happy with the “centralized” democracy in Sikkim is to defame them, it is said. Keeping in view the growing developmental inputs and demand along with the directives of the Central govt. to generate internal revenue sources, the State govt. has been emphasizing in planning developmental activities with special focus on development of revenue sources. Power generation is only the means to achieve the target of earning sustainable revenue for which the government of Sikkim has been focusing on, the release adds.The State has identified and awarded 26 hydro projects with the total installed capacity of 4747 MW to the Independent Power Producers, besides Teesta Stage-V having installed capacity of 510 MW is in the advance stage of completion. The projects have been handed over to the Independent Power Producers on best of terms that state shall always stands to gain in terms of resource, employment, skill development and technology. The State govt. has taken all precautionary measures for the safety of the environment and ecological balance, the release claims.The govt. in order to address the social concerns arising out of these projects, has taken a decision to constitute a Project Implementation and Monitoring Cell for smooth implementation of these projects, which has been given the assignment of studying multi-dimensional aspects and impact of the projects, the release adds.
SDF and its leader Dr.Pawan Chamling is the firm believer in principles of democracy.People are free to undertake any political activities ,They are free to express their thoughts and opinions and free to criticize government on any issue or matter without any kind of restrictions. The SDF party and its government always have respected and valued freedom of press and media in state .Newspapers and electronic media are allowed to work freely in a peaceful atmosphere without any intimidation from authorities.Media persons are not deterred from exposing and expressing any issue.
The State is fighting for the law and for the law’s protection. The Opposition forces are fighting against and in defiance of the law.”
