Gangtok: In continuation of their protests by way of making more Congress supporters getting court arrested on Sikkim Congress demand seeking unconditional release of Sikkim Congress members who are under arrests on charges of burning effigy of Sikkim Governor in a suo moto action by Sikkim Police, Today a group of 33 Congress party workers marched to Sadar Thana in Gangtok and erupted in protest against the state government and condemning Police arrests of SPCC members earlier this week but Sikkim Police refused to register a case against any of the protesters and asked them to go.
The Congress supports had visited the Sadar Thana today for “courting arrest” in protest against the illegal arrest of four members of the party on August 5 and 22 others who had courted arrest earlier who are under judicial custody at Rongyek.
Claiming that all previous arrests were made without any magisterial orders, SPCC has demanded immediate release of those arrested further stating that the State Government has no legal ground to keep them under detention.
Four party members who were arrested on August 4 along with 22 others who offered “court arrest” on August 9 are presently under judicial remand at the State Jail at Rongyek.
In the meantime, a press release issued released by the party alleged that a large number of anti-social elements of Sikkim had stationed in Janata Bhawan and hotels in Gangtok with a sole intention of creating disturbance in the State.
The party has also filed an FIR to the Sadar Police Station as well as alerted the Director of Police, the release says adding that the Janata Bhawan is constructed for the people of Sikkim and not for anti-social elements. “The State Government will be solely responsible for the occurrence of any untoward events in the State. SPCC condemns such activities in the State in the strongest terms,” the release reads.
The release also says that Acharya Tshering Lama has sent an SOS to Sonia Gandhi, President, All India Congress Committee requesting for immediate action “to stop the SDF Government’s atrocities on the people of Sikkim and in particular the Congressmen and other opposition party people as well as those supporting the Affected Citizens of Teesta in their fight against implementation of hydel projects in Dzongu”.
