TRADE RESUMPTION DATE VEX SIKKIM MERCHANTS


GANGTOK, April 23: As countdowns are on for the second phase of border trade through old silk route, confusions on the exact date of trade resumption is in the air raising several speculations in terms of business mechanism of late.
As no precise date has so far been scheduled for the resumption of border trade this year, according to agreements between the two nations full-fledged trade is likely to begin from first week of June, this year.
But source information reveals an utterly different picture at the other side of the border. It is reported that nearly 650 Chinese traders are in rapid preparation setting up stocks in full at Yatung Mart expectant of multiplied business turnover this year – being informed that border trade will be commencing from 1 May, this year.
Meanwhile, their Sikkimese counterpart appeared totally oblivious of the developing situations across the limit. “No intimation is provided to us till date”, said a Sikkimese trader today speaking to Sikkim Express. Source information also reveals the Chinese Embassy at New Delhi after having a parley with the Indian government pertaining the issue intimated the Chinese traders of the same. Infact, clearance and other formalities are also completed by the Chinese army.
Talking over the matter, President to Sikkim Chamber of Commerce SK Sarda expressed his total ignorance over trade resumption date. He said, a rapid process is under its way to identify Nathula as favored nation land custom station through which one can import and export anything subject to the import and export order.
Meanwhile, Director to Commerce and Industries Department SP Subba speaking over the phone today informed that the Union Ministry of Commerce has rendered no such information to Sikkim government. He also informed about the meeting scheduled on 25 April at New Delhi with officials of Ministry of Commerce, where infrastructure development will be the major focus.
