Gangtok: Three days after the devastating earthquake, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi was in Sikkim on Wednesday. Gandhi headed to affected areas across Gangtok to meet victims and their families.

He was scheduled to make a trip to Meghalaya on Wednesday for a public meeting of Youth Congress membership but changed his plan to include this visit.

Gandhi visited Gangtok on Wednesday morning before attending the scheduled Youth Congress meeting in Meghalaya.His Youth Congress membership meeting is scheduled at 11:30 am at Mini Stadium, Ampathi in West Garo Hills District of Meghalaya.

The death toll in Sunday's powerful temblor has shot up to 82, 68 in India, including 53 in Sikkim, while more than 3,000 people have been rescued in quake-hit areas of Sikkim by defence forces so far.

Rahul Gandhi may visit quake-hit Sikkim tomorrow

Gangtok:Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi is expected to visit Sikkim on Wednesday in the aftermath of Sunday's 6.8 magnitude earthquake that has claimed 50 lives in the state.

The Congress leader is expected to visit the injured at Sir Tashi Namgyal Memorial Hospital in capital Gangtok. Reports said he will also travel up to Chungthang in north Sikkim, one of the worst-hit areas.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was in Gangtok on Tuesday and visited the affected areas. She had extended all help to the Sikkim government in providing relief to those hit by the quake.

Rescue and relief operations continued in Sikkim for the second day on Tuesday. A road leading to Mangan, where the epicentre of Sunday's magnitude earthquake was located, was also cleared by the Army.
