SIKKIM GOVERNMENT CONDEMNS INCIDENT OF EFFIGY-BURNING


Gangtok: The Secretary ,IPR department,Govt.of Sikkim has issued following communique to media on the issueof Sikkim Governor effigy burning by members of Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee:

The burning the effigy of the Governor V Rama Rao by the Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee (SPCC) in front of the Congress Bhawan on August 4 has been viewed with “grave concern” by the State Government.
“Such an act by the SPCC is only an irresponsible act but it is against the law and defies all principles of democratic norms,” a press release issued by the Information & Public Relations Department here today said.
“Article 51A of the Constitution of India imposes the duties on every citizen of India to honour the Constitutional Institutions. Any act or acts by any citizen against the mandate of law thereby lowering the image of such Constitutional Institutions or lowering its esteem or ridiculing its position would be total violation of such mandate of the Constitution duties and obligations. Such illegal acts cannot be tolerated and the State Government is duty bound to uphold the rule of law under any circumstances,” the press release said.
“The State Government is committed to respect and uphold the esteem and dignity of the Constitutional authority and to ensure the rule of law in the State of Sikkim,” it added.
“Sikkim is one of the most peaceful and tranquil border State in the country and such anti-national, anti-people and undemocratic act of the SPCC is vehemently opposed and condemned by the State Government being against the democratic norms. The State Government appeals to the peace loving people of Sikkim to keep away and not get influenced by such illegal activities, in the interest of the peace, development and progress of the State.”
