" DZONGU MLA IGNORANT OF FACTS AND NEEDS OF HIS OWN PEOPLE"
GANGTOK: A Meeting of the Affected Citizens of Teesta (ACT) was held at BL House here today, during which a number of resolutions were passed.
The meeting resolved that Dzongu MLA, Sonam Gyatso Lepcha, “had no moral right to destroy the unity of the Lepchas of Sikkim, whose culture, tradition, custom and religion and the issue of very survival were being threatened” by the possible implementation of the mega Hydro Electric Power Projects.
According to a press communiqué issued by ACT Chief Coordinator, Tseten Lepcha, the meeting regretted the fact that the MLA was the only one “criticising the efforts of his own people without knowing the repercussion of his act” and the only elected member who was “totally ignorant of the facts and figures and the needs of his people.”
“The meeting sincerely advises and reminds (the Dzongu MLA) that he has been elected by the precious votes of the people of Dzongu and not by the projects developers. No price can be fixed for the pristine environment, human lives and rich treasures of Dzongu,” Mr. Lepcha said.
The ACT has advised the MLA “to refrain from using the simple citizens of Dzongu as a human shield for his mistakes and anti-Sikkimese activities.”
The meeting also accepted and recognised the resolution expressed by the Lepchas of West Bengal that Dzongu was “the Cradle of the identity of the Lepchas in the world” and it should be protected at any cost. “No individual has any right to compromise the existence of the people and the land there,” the resolution read.
The meeting resolved to thanks all national, regional and local political, social, NGOs and individuals for their support for the Satyagraha initiated by ACT.
It was also resolved during the meeting to undertake a spot visit and personal contact programme with the families affected by the Teesta Hydro Electric Power Project Stage V and extend all possible support to fight against the violations of the basic rights of the people there
