For lawyers who want a promotion but are rejected by the courts they practice in, Sikkim has a solution.They don't even need to live in Sikkim but just get their promotion as senior counsel from the Sikkim high court, and then go back to their old bar.

But now Supreme Court judges have complained to the Bar Council about this trend.''We have received complaints that this is happening, that people go to Sikkim and pay money and get a promotion. It happened during the tenure of one judge,'' said MN Krishnamani, Bar Council.In the last year, 59 lawyers got redesignated by the Sikkim high court, though none of them even practised there.In fact, Sikkim has just three judges and no pending cases.Promotions of lawyers are usually decided by judges of the courts they practice in. Criteria like experience, income and performance are crucial.But the recent trend in Sikkim, where everyone seems to be getting a promotion, has worried Supreme Court judges.It would mean that as senior counsels, these lawyers will demand more money from their clients without actually deserving it
