Gangtok, May 21:
Captain Silver, a new XXX rum, has hit the bars in town.
The Sikkim-based distillery, Mayell & Fraser, launched its latest product at X’Cape, a night club-cum bar in Baluakhani, this evening. The flavour of the rum has been developed by master blender Vijay Shah. The liquor baron from Nepal is the chairman of Himalayan Jwalakhel Distillery there and a technical consultant to Mayell & Fraser.
The liquor industry is one of the biggest industries in Sikkim and a major source of revenue. There are as many as four distilleries in the state producing various alcoholic drinks. Besides, there is one brewery which produces the world class Dansberg blue beer, recently rated as the best beer in the country.
Mayell & Fraser’s distillery, located at Bageykhola near Singtam in East Sikkim, was opened six months ago. Its first product, Castle Pride, a deluxe grain whisky, was born out of a tie-up with world famous scotch producers Angus Dundee Plc of Glasgow in Scotland.

Castle Pride was very well received and has already captured almost 50 per cent of the market share in the state.
Within the next two weeks, Mayell & Fraser’s 100 per cent scotch whisky, Piper’s Clan, will also be launched.
The chairman-cum-managing director of the company, Guru T. Ladakhi, said the target was to produce a minimum of 1 lakh cases of Captain Silver per year.
“Our first product, the deluxe grain whisky, has been well received, which is a very good sign for a totally new product,” Ladakhi said.
“Castle Pride is already selling in Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Bengal and Chhattisgarh. We are positive that this new product will also be well received,” the managing director added.
About Captain Silver, Shah said this particular blend of rum comes with a lot of natural ingredients and flavouring extracts. Mature extract of cane sugar molasses, which is used for the blending, is brought from Jamaica in the West Indies through Europe, the master blender added.
The rum is priced at a competitive rate of Rs 107 per bottle while the Castle Pride grain whiskey comes at Rs 215 per bottle.
