Dalai Lama appeals to China for protecting Tibet’s Glaciers

21.11.2009

At a press conference in Rome, the Tibetan leader raised concerns about climate change and its devastating effects on Tibet’s landscape.

[Dalai Lama, Tibetan Spiritual Leader]:

"Some of the rivers which come from Tibetan glaciers or snow mountains, some within 15, 20 years may dry. So it is as we mentioned a very, very serious matter. .. So with full cooperation of Chinese experts, that we organize some experts to go to Tibet and study how much damage (has been) already done and what is the best way to protect (the environment), the best way to reduce the damage. I think that China is also in need, so (I think we should do it) with full cooperation with Chinese experts. I think that's one thing we can do."

The Dalai Lama said that it is important to cooperate with China over global warming.

He said that a political solution between Tibet and China may take time but the environment cannot wait.

[Dalai Lama, Tibetan Spiritual Leader]:

"I also think that the political solution (for Tibet) may take time - but that's ok, we can wait. But damaging the ecology, year by year, is happening. So we really need serious studies and to make a plan to protect (the environment). That's I think very, very important."

Global warming has a serious impact on Tibetan glaciers.

Yak, indian army’s new beast of burden

Sikkim,November 20: The yak may take the place of the mule in carrying food, arms and ammunition for the Indian army on the uppermost reaches of mountains.

The army's 190 Mountain Brigade is in collaboration with the National Research Centre on Yak (NRCY) here for an experiment to replace mules with yaks for forward posts at high altitudes.

The results of the experiment, headed by NRCY Senior Scientist K.P. Ramesha and Lieutenant Colenel Nirbhay Kumar, were published in the Indian Veterinary Journal (IVJ) and the Indian Journal of Animal Sciences.

“A study was conducted at (an) altitude (of) 14,400 feet in a forward army post area to determine the suitability of using yaks as pack animals during snowfall. There was no effect of snowfall on (the) speed of (the animals) as well as on (their) physiological status. Trials indicated that yaks could be used as pack animals even during heavy snowfall at high altitudes,” the summary report in the IVJ said.

A similar exercise by China apparently prompted the trial.

It snows for four months at 7,500 feet or higher along the northern frontier - from Sikkim to Arunachal Pradesh and to Kashmir.

Posts at those heights remain virtually cut-off during this period, exposing them to possible raids from across the borders.

The yak is a hairy, bovine creature that cannot live below 7,500 feet. Its double-coat protects it from icy winds, and its high red blood cell count helps it to breathe normally up to 15,000 feet.

It can be easily trained as a pack animal.

Sikkim Opposition Parties demands enquiry into multi-crore fraud attempt

Gangtok, November 20: Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee (SPCC) has demanded the investigating agencies like CID should be independent hand for conducting in-depth investigation in major crimes like the multi-crore scam to hoodwink State Bank of Sikkim (SBS) which was busted recently.
In a press statement, SPCC congratulated the CID and State Intelligence Bureau for their ‘unprecedented success’ in busting the serious racket of Rs. 85 crores. The party said that names of those influential persons involved in the case should be made public so these big names are exposed. Culprits must be punished irrespective of their official, social and political status, the party said.
The SPCC added that ever since the formation of the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) in Sikkim, the State has been witnessing innumerable major crimes. The opposition party highlighted cases like printing of fake currency notes, operation of illegal private banks like Teena, Bharosa and Siddhi, which swindled away crores of rupees of the depositors, smuggling of red sandalwood.
“The commitment of the SDF government to uproot corruption and illegal activities from the face of Sikkim has so far proved complete failure. Instead there has been constant increase in such activities”, said the SPCC.

Sikkim Push to save life on peaks

Gangtok, Nov. 20: Stakeholders in adventure tourism and tour operators have set in motion an exercise to devise a rescue and relief mechanism to handle high-altitude mishaps during mountaineering and trekking expeditions.

The move comes in the wake of the deaths of two mountaineers and injuries to other members of a trekking team from Mumbai in an avalanche on October 19. The mishap occurred when they were descending from the 19,700-feet Mount Thinchingkang.

Soon after, a 69-year-old American on a trekking expedition to Dzongri died because of altitude sickness and was cremated in Yuksom. Both the peaks are in West Sikkim.

Added to these are occasional road accidents involving tourists, especially on the routes to Yumthang in North Sikkim and Nathu-la in East Sikkim.

Paljor Lachungpa, the president of the Travel Agents’ Association of Sikkim (TAAS), said a meeting had been held with the officials of key state government departments to discuss the issue.

Members of the Sikkim Amateur Mountaineers Association also attended the meeting.

Lachungpa said famed British mountaineer Roger Payne, who had recently scaled 18,300-feet Mount Jupno in West Sikkim, had offered several inputs to the TAAS for setting up a rescue mechanism in the state. Payne has brought in several international mountaineers to the state for expeditions in the past six years.

“He has offered to share with the TAAS the knowledge and experience he gained in the past three decades by climbing mountains in all parts of the world and has pointed out that different rescue models exist in different Alpine areas,” said the TAAS president.

Payne has suggested that the stakeholders here first study various models in other places before evolving a mechanism for Sikkim.

“Payne suggested that an expert team should be formed with all equipment to train porters, guides and yak boys. There should also be a 24-hour help-line with a good communication system, especially for West Sikkim. He expressed surprise that there was no radio system along the Dzongri trek and porters had to come running down to Tshoka bearing bad news,” said Lachungpa.

Hill lady in Antarctica, aim South Pole

Darjeeling, Nov. 19: Strong whispering wind in Antarctica might have blown away the tents but it has failed to shred the spirit of Reena Kaushal Dharmshaktu, who as a member of the Kaspersky Lab Commonwealth Antarctic Expedition is vying to be the first Indian woman to ski to the South Pole.

While speaking exclusively to The Telegraph “from somewhere in Antarctica”, Reena sounded high on adrenaline. “The conditions are beautiful but difficult. The winds are very strong and two of our tents were blown away and we had to work hard to set them up again,” she said over the sat-phone.

After spending a week at Punta Arenas, Chile, as part of the pre-expedition preparation, the team reached the base camp in Antarctica on a specially equipped aircraft. The four-and-a-half hour flight is undertaken only a few times each year during the short austral summer.

The team is presently camping somewhere near the Patriot Hills — which is the only commercial base camp in Antarctica. The Hills lie on the lee of a range of mountains, including Antarctica's tallest peak, Mt Vinsion, and are situated near a vast area of naturally occurring blue ice that is used as a runaway, said a spokesperson of the team in an email to The Telegraph.

“We will be leaving this place in the next two days for another point from where we will start to ski,” said Reena, a Darjeeling girl who settled in Delhi after marrying Everester Loveraj Dharmshaktu.

Once the team starts skiing, there will be no trained guides or dropping of food. The team will have to fend for themselves, do every chore right from pitching the tent to cooking their meals on their own.

“We are getting up as early as 7am and skiing as much as possible,” said Reena.

For a week, the team has acclimatised at Patriot Hills where the average temperature has hovered between –20 degrees Celsius and –40 degrees Celsius. They have also adjusted to 24-hour daylight and dazzling scenery that is so bright that it could cause blindness and the constant threat of serious sunburn because of lack of sufficient ozone above Antarctica.

The Kaspersky Expedition will see women from eight Commonwealth countries – Brunei, Cyprus, Ghana, India, Jamaica, New Zealand, Singapore and the United Kingdom – brave blizzards, crevasses and temperatures below –40 degrees Celsius as they ski 900km over approximately 40 days to the Geographic South Pole. On reaching their target, the team members from Brunei, Cyprus, Ghana and Jamaica will be the first people from their respective nations, male or female, to ski to the South Pole.

Those from India, New Zealand and Singapore will be the first women from their nations to make this symbolic and prestigious journey. The expedition, which is being led by Felicity Aston, is being organised to mark the 60th anniversary of the Commonwealth and is expected to reach South Pole during the first week of January.

Reena has not been able to contact any of her family members. “Please tell them I am absolutely fine and please tell all my well-wishers to pray for me,” she said.

Dissidence continues in Sikkim Democratic Front

Gangtok, November 19: Astounded by the recent comment of one of its former legislator Bhoj Raj Rai, who criticized Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) leader Pawan Kumar Chamling for his dictatorial style of functioning, the tremors are implied to have made the SDF ranks rickety. The situation in the ruling SDF has come to such a passé that state emissaries are seen busy computing to ascertain who among the SDF would stick to their master and who would shore up with their disgruntled MLA PS Tamang.

It is also learnt that Chamling’s ‘spin doctors’ are making tiring efforts to comprehend who would be the next after Bhoj Raj Rai to rise up against its own leader. Meanwhile, Chamling’s ‘Kitchen Cabinet’ is also busy recalling its founder member and former MLA Girish Chandra Rai during the turbulence. A member of the ‘SDF Kitchen cabinet’ on terms of anonymity informed that Girish Chandra Rai who is having a ‘cold-war’ relation with Chamling is believed to follow suit after the rebel Bhoj Raj Rai. All attempts to contact Girish Chandra Rai failed, as his mobile was out of range.

Interestingly, the SDF district level meeting slated for November 25 at Sichey public ground is seen to be deferred for November 27, the date scheduled for the foundation stone laying for a Kirat Rai Mankhim at Ranka under PS Tamang’s Burtuk constituency. Although the deferment has not been officially confirmed by the party.

It is also learnt that, DR Thapa who was earlier appointed the in-charge for the Upper Burtuk constituency is yet to assume his post while Ugen Bhutia, another party worker is expected to be replace Thapa for the post. It may be mentioned here that PS Tamang was marginalized to as the in-charge of tribal affairs of the party following a massive re-organisation within the SDF last week. Thapa’s mobile phone being switched off couldn’t be contacted for his views.

Lepcha march to Dzongu

Gangtok, Nov. 18: The Kalimpong-based Indigenous Lepcha Tribal Association will begin its second march to Dzongu in North Sikkim tomorrow after last year’s foiled attempt. The ILTA is determined to reach the destination to offer prayers at the holy site.

In April 2008, the ILTA had to return from Dikchu, the entry point to Dzongu, in the face of hostilities. The 500-odd marchers were escorted back by Sikkim armed police after a huge crowd of local people had set up a blockade in Dikchu.

This time, the ILTA claims to have secured the permission of the Union home and tribal affairs ministries for the pakram takram or pilgrimage to Dzongu. “We have submitted our requests to the Sikkim chief secretary, home secretary, North district administration. We plan to complete the pilgrimage between November 19 and 21,” said Paval Shimik, the ILTA president. “Dzongu is like Varanasi and Jerusalem to us. We will return after offering prayers to our guardian deities there.”

During last year’s stand-off, the Sikkim police managed to convince the Lepchas to call off the last leg of the march, fearing violence. The marchers were driven back to the Rangpo border.

This time, too, the people of North Sikkim have opposed the march. Dzongu MLA Sonam Gyatso Lepcha described the march as an “outside interference” in local affairs. “The pilgrimage is a ploy and is politically motivated,” he said.

Fresh sighting of bears at Gangtok

Fresh sighting of bear at Tathangchen prompts forest dept to set up a trap

GANGTOK, November 18: State forest department is maintaining strict vigil in bear wandering suspected areas even as fresh sightings continue to come from various parts of East Sikkim.
Today, bear sightings were reported from three areas of East Sikkim-Rumtek, Ban Jhakri falls and Tathangchen area of Gangtok.
The forest department received information of bear sighting from Tathangchen area, the same area where a juvenile bear had mauled a grass cutter on November 15.
A forest team led by DFO (Wildlife, East) Karma Legshey along with a team of Gangtok Sadar police rushed to the spot and immediately launched preventive measures. A cage has also been set up in the area in order to trap the sighted bear. Two armed forest guards are presently maintaining vigil on the trap.

Bear sightings were also reported from Rumtek area which was responded by the forest department. Jigmee Bhutia (Range Officer, Fhambongla wildlife sanctuary, east range) along with local territorial staff conducted enquiries at the spot but the bear was not seen again. The locals have been sensitized about the preventive bears by the forest team.

Meanwhile, the cub which had separated from the mother bear at Rakdong Tintek yesterday has gone back to the forest areas. However, the forest personnel are still maintaining vigil in the area.

Bhoj Raj Rai unfurls protest flag against Sikkim Democratic Front

‘Sikkim People are desperately seeking an alternative’

GANGTOK, November 18: After making few subdued noises against the decisions of the State Government, party advisor and former legislature Bhoj Raj Rai today raised the dissatisfaction decibel to a scream slamming the ruling Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) leadership on a host of issues notably on ‘Parivartan & Alternative’ plank.
The flags of revolt were unfurled by the SDF advisor at one of the SDF forts-MLA hostel, Sonam Gyatso Marg here at Gangtok-where he claimed that the Sikkimese Janta is ‘unsatisfied’ with the undemocratic activities of ruling front reaching ‘level of intolerance’.
“People of Sikkim are searching for an alternative”, said Mr. Rai to reporters at MLA hostel.
And the alternative is Upper Burtuk SDF legislature PS Golay, Mr. Rai said. He said that Mr. Golay will a political party desired by the Sikkimese people led by Golay will soon dawn in Sikkim.
The former legislature accused the SDF chief Pawan Chamling of trying to finish the political career of Mr. Golay. Efforts and conspiracies are still on to destabilize the popularity of Mr. Golay, he said.
When questioned on the objective of protesting against the Chief Minister from the MLA hostel, Mr. Rai asserted that he is least bothered about the consequences. “I am not afraid of anyone and I dare Chamling to expel me”, he said.
Mr. Rai’s show of confidence stems from his own claims that he is not the only one against the SDF leadership. There are many more like me and the numbers would come out in open in coming days, he said.
“When we come out in the field there will be an earthquake in Sikkim politics”, Mr. Rai said.
When questioned over his claims that ‘Sikkimese people are unsatisfied’ given the fact that it has been hardly six months since the Janta had given an absolute mandate silencing the Parivartan diatribe, Mr. Rai attributed the debacle to lack of quality Opposition and a ‘real alternative’.
“People were compelled to vote for SDF as there was no alternative to Chamling in the Assembly elections, asserted Mr. Rai. He maintained that though he has not given resignation from the ruling front, he has already left the party.
Mr. Rai claimed that Mr. Golay would be soon coming out among the masses in a new avatar. And by this time, the SDF party will have split in two halves, he claimed.
However, Mr. Rai refused to disclose the time period when Mr. Golay would come overboard.

SIKKIM:Snow is here, but winter far away

Wait till December to feel the shiver, drizzle-induced chill not to stay: Met experts

Gangtok,Nov. 17: Winter this year has to race hard to catch up with Siliguri, Met experts have said. And it may be as late as the first week of December before it comes calling on the foothills of the Himalayas.

While snow drizzled in Nathu-la and its neighbouring areas today, a common phenomenon this time of the year in the higher reaches of Sikkim like the border pass at 14,400ft, there seems to be no sign of winter in north Bengal plains where the woollens are usually out in November.

A light shower or two in the past 24 hours did raise a hope for the much-awaited cold, but weathermen have dismissed any hope of winter.

According to the Met office, today was the “hottest day” of November in the past four years (see chart). Gopinath Raha, the in-charge of the Jalpaiguri flood and meteorological office, said an anti-cyclonic condition over the Bay of Bengal was the reason for the misty weather.

“There were drizzles in almost every part of north Bengal in the past 24 hours which decreased the temperature, but it should not be described as cold that brings winter to the region. Usually, the minimum temperature varies in this part of the state during the middle of November between 15 and 16 degrees Celsius. But today’s temperature is 19.5 degrees, which is the highest in the past four years in the region,” Raha said.

The Met expert said the weather would remain the same in the next few days. “The anti-cyclonic condition that developed over the Bay of Bengal in the past couple of days has advanced towards the northeastern part of the country by covering Orissa and Bihar, resulting in the cloudy weather in the region,” Raha said. “There is a possibility of the weather remaining the same in the next two days.”

The drizzle-induced morning chill prompted many Siliguri residents to bring out their woollens. Most of them were, however, not aware that today was the hottest compared to temperature on this day in the past four years.

But the damp weather is expected to have a bad impact on winter farming, feel agriculture department officials.

“As the paddy is ready for harvesting everywhere, the rainfall at this time will affect the crop. This type of moisture in the environment is ideal for blights,” said Mehfuz Alam, the assistant director of the Siliguri subdivisional agricultural department.

In Sikkim, there was heavy snowfall at Chhangu and Nathu-la from the morning, disrupting the border trade with the Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR). Sources in the commerce department of Sikkim said no traders arrived at the trade mart at Sherathang from TAR. Traders from Sikkim, who managed to reach the spot, however, could not set up shop and returned to Gangtok. The trade through Nathu-la, located at 14,400 feet, officially closes on November 30.

The first snowfall in Sikkim this season was at Yumthang in North Sikkim at 12,000 feet in the last week of October.
