Denzong Boys outplay Royal Rangers

GANGTOK, September 8: Charlton Chapman coached Royal Rangers slipped out of the 31st All India Governor’s Gold Cup football tournament while local team Denzong Boys slithered into the pre-quarters with a 2-0 win.

Dry cleaners in the town should be raising their eyebrows as the players marched off the pitch after the final whistle soiled with dark mud paste from their studs to their hair.

Free flowing game was also disrupted as the ball got struck around some slushy patches near the midfield of the pitch forcing the players to go for the air option. It was one such wicked cross from right winger Dinesh Thapa which was sneaked into the net by captain KC Dadul for the first goal to Denzong Boys in the 11th minute.

As players slipped, slithered and sunk into the slushy patches of the field, scoring opportunities for the Delhi team were very few which was easily bundled out by the Denzong defense.

Nigerian Tarus T Manneah of Denzong Boys livened up the drab game in the second half with his gazelle gallops, stepovers, flicks and other forms of showmanship. His showmanship hit a high after he consolidated the lead with a quality finish in the 62nd minute.
Having collected the ball from outside the box, Manneh swiftly dismissed two defenders and sent the Royal Rangers goalie towards Ranka while lobbing the ball into the opposite side with the outside of his right boot for his second goal of the tournament.
Manneh could have added another goal but his fierce shot rebounded off the post.
With today’s easy victory, Denzong Boys has entered the pre-quarters of the tournament and faces a strong Punjab Police side on September 11.
