Namcheybong Landslide victims given part relief


Gangtok: Landslide victims of different blocks, namely, Nandok, Naitam, Assam, and Linzgeys under Namcheybong Constituency, East Sikkim, were given compensation (relief) by area MLA Mr. Beg Bahadur Rai and Dr. A.B.Karki, SDM East, in presence of local panchayats and departmental officials.
Takchamchu, a rivulet, caused the major landslide of 5th August that submerged cardamom, orange , ginger and paddy fields of different villages damaging standing crops from 14th Mile to Setipool. Villagers of Khola Gaon, Kabrabotey, Gaucharan, Rai Gaon, Setipool and Pastenga were the worst victims of the slide as some of them lost cattle along with their sheds .
A total of 106 families were handed over relief funds in presence of MLA and SDM. Mr. Rai, MLA, in conversation with the locals said, we are trying to provide the needed help to the victims. The area is damaged so badly that it is not possible to rebuild it shortly. The state government has plans to rebuild it. It takes time but the area will regain its shape, he added.
SDM, Dr. Karki told villagers, state government has always thought for the victims. The amount of compensation is fixed by central government. He said that this amount is only for the loss of land, the victims will be provided as much help as needed to rehabilitate them. The flood in the rivulet Takchamchu has extensively damaged the area disrupting electricity, road connection by breaking bridges that connect different villages with Gangtok or Ranipool.
