Govt permission mandatory in Sikkim for all construction works

Gangtok: To control the ecological damage caused by construction works, the Sikkim government has made it mandatory for all agencies undertaking various development projects to obtain a No Objection Certificate from the state Mines, Minerals and Geology department, official sources said today.
The decision came after reports of damage being caused to the landscape of the hilly terrain as well as the environment due to various construction activities going on in the state. The order will also be applicable to government departments, besides various public and private sector agencies, the sources said.

Director of the Mines, Minerals and Geology department T. Tashi said that his department will be able to give valuable inputs about the nature of soil and geo-seismic details of the construction sites before the construction work begins so that the ecological damage can be minimised.
