DR Thapa elected president of Bar Association of Sikkim


GANGTOK, August 9: DR Thapa has won the election of Bar Association of Sikkim (BAS) for the post of president held here today in a close margin to his rival Senior Advocate Tej Bahadur Thapa.
Mr. Thapa, former general secretary of BAS and also one of the social activists and a professional lawyer expressed his gratitude to his supporters and Bar members who have shown their concerns towards the reaffirmation to work together for prosperity, dignity and integrity of the members at large, informs a press release.
He said that he will uphold the dignity of the association and bar members with distinct identity.
He will hold the post for another two years as president of BAS.
It is also informed that the election, which was supposed to be held in every two years, was held after six years.
Also, Bhaskar Raj Pradhan, one of the prominent lawyers of BAS has been elected for the post of general secretary whereas Narendra Rai was elected for vice president.
Kessang Diki and Ajay Rathi are elected for the post of assistant general secretary I and II respectively. Jagat Rai, former publicity secretary was elected for the post of treasurer and Ashok Pradhan was elected as assistant treasurer. Similarly, Sunil Baraily was elected as library secretary and BK Rai, KT Gyatso, Sunita Pradhan, Sabina Chettri and AK Gathani were elected as central executive member of the BAS.
It may be mentioned here that the topmost post of the elite association was held by former Advocate General Sonam Pintso Wangdi for almost eight years and had also faced criticism from bar members for his failure to conduct election of Bar in scheduled time, has resigned from the post after he was elevated to High Court Judge in June last.
