Gangtok Jail inmates celebrate I-Day

Gangtok: 63rd Independence Day programme was also celebrated at state jail. Mr. Hissey Lachungpa, political advisor to Chief Minister, was the chief guest of the programme.A cultural programme including musical renderings was organized at the venue after hoisting of national flag by chief guest. The jail inmates actively participated in the programme by singing, dancing, reciting poems and stories. Much vaunted ‘Spiderman’ Rakesh Rai also recited poems.Chief guest Mr. Lachungpa said “Jail is not a strange place as so many great political leaders have spent their lives in jail” and added that he himself had spent 32 days in that jail as a political prisoner.
Mr. Lachungpa said to err is human but there is need to be rectified. He assured of necessary development and reformat of the jail.Mr. Thap Tshering, jail superintendent, said the jail has provided training of floriculture, mushroom cultivation, carpentry, dairy, piggery farming to jail inmates. He also informed the department has earned Rs.12 lakh from jail products.A volleyball tournament between jail inmates and Sikkim Bar Association was held on the day in which jail was the winner.
