UNCONTESTED CANDIDATES LEAD THE WAY


121 candidates out of 243 seats in East district Gram Panchayats were declared uncontested


GANGTOK, October 05: The East and South districts have revealed a record list of uncontested candidates from the ruling Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) party in both the Zilla Panchayat and Gram Panchayat elections scheduled to be held on October 26 this year.
After a long and tiresome compilation of the list of candidates here at the District Administrative Office today, the final and the concrete details of the panchayat candidates for the East district was finally released today late evening.
The vicinity was teeming with people till the final set up was out.
As per the report, nine candidates out of 27 were declared uncontested in the Zilla Panchayat. The rest would be contesting the elections. For Gram Panchayat polls, 121 candidates out of 243 seats in East district were declared uncontested while the remaining 122 would be contesting for the elections.
Reports also suggest that there was no nomination filed in Nabey ward of North Sikkim. “Re-election will be held later for the said ward,” CP Dhakal, Joint Chief Electoral Officer said.

For Gyalshing Sub-division, out of 25 seats, 17 were declared uncontested with 8 contesting for the Zilla Panchayat elections. Similarly for Gram Panchayat in Geyzing Sub-division, out of 139 wards 120 were declared uncontested with 19 contesting candidates.
The trend remained the same in South District as well with 13 declared uncontested out of 23 seats in Zilla Panchayat. In the GPUs, 151 were announced uncontested out of the total of 257 candidates. The rest of the candidates will be contesting.
Mr. Dhakal informed that the Returning Officer for Soreng Sub-Division has been replaced. The earlier Returning Officer who was also the SDM of Soreng, Sonam Tshering Tamang has been replaced by BB Subba, the additional District Collector, West for the Gram Panchayat Units falling under Soreng Sub division. The decision was taken up due to the administrative failure by the earlier Returning Officer.
“The printing of the ballot paper will be commenced from tomorrow at Sikkim Government Press under the vigil of police custody,”’ briefed Mr. Dhakal.
The compilation was still taking place in other Sub-divisions till the filing of the report.
