WEST SIKKIM CUT OFF DUE TO EXTENSIVE LANDSLIDES

GANGTOK, September 12: Heavy rainfall in the past one weak has caused extensive damages across the West District which has resulted in disruption of road connectivity as well as damages to houses and standing properties.
The road formations have been damaged at several places between Gyalshing-Naya Bazar. Around 90 mts of road has been washed away at Sisney in Nayabazar which will take at least 10 days to be restored for normal flow of traffic.
Another major landslide at Bojek has washed away the road connecting Nayabazar-Daramdin. Further, the road connectivity between Reshi-Rinchepong, Gyalshing-Tashiding, Pelling-Dentam has been disrupted. The Nayabazar-Soreng road is in precarious condition. The Secretary Roads and Bridges, Govind Sharma along with DLRC (West) inspected the affected areas on September 9 and the Secretary has instructed the Superintendent In charge of Roads, West to take immediate action to open the blocked road.
It has also been reported by the Superintendent Engineer, Energy and Power Department that three 66 KV tower below Kamrang has been totally damaged due to the landslide on September 10 evening resulting in irregular power supply to the West District, which will take at least a week to restore normal supply.
According to DC West, there is no storage of essential commodities in the West District at the present, excepting petrol and diesel. The situation is being monitored round the clock, the DC said.
However, it is anticipated that if the roads are not restored within next few days, it could lead to a crisis of essential commodities particularly petrol, diesel and LPG
