RANGPO, September 12: The National Highway 31-A finally opened today after several days of blockade.
Only big vehicles will be allowed to use the road.
The road was closed when a 50 mtr stretch caved in near Tarkhola washing away the entire bridge followed by a series of landslides between Rangpo and Melli.
Yesterday, only five petrol tankers and one truck loaded with LPG cylinder could pass the temporary suspension bridge across the slide, after which the road was closed till 12 pm today.
The DGP, CM Ravindran also visited the site today and took stock of the present situation.
The raw material for the construction of a Bailey bridge at the affected site has already reached and the work has begun. The BRO will take the help of the Army for the construction of this bridge.
However, if the weather remains clear, there are indications that the Highway would be restored by Sunday.
Meanwhile, Puran Subba, In-charge, Kalimpong Police Station has requested owners of the small vehicles to ply via Monsong for few days. He has also advised the drivers and owners of the big vehicles to load only up to 8 tonnes.
