Gangtok, August 11: The World Brest Feeding Week programmes came to an end with baby show, dance and quiz competition at the Anganwadi Centre in Lumsey in East district. yesterday. Programmes were held at Aganwadi Centres in Dechling, Rongyok, 2nd Mile, Upper Chandmari, Khamdong in East district. To bring awareness of breast feeding as studies have shown that if all women began breast feeding within the first hour it would have saved one million of the four million new born deaths. To increase participation of mothers, children and families the ICDS centre and the Anganwadi workers were involved in the programmes which included seminars, workshops, discussions debate and baby shows.
The week long programme was inaugurated at STNM Hospital in Gangtok on the 1st of August with the workshop organised by the Food & Nutrition Board, Government of India in assistance with Social Justice Empowerment and Welfare Department, Government of Sikkim. The week provides an opportunity to inform people about the benefits of breast feeding to families and hence saving lives.
