Sikkim have high power transmission and distribution losses

New Delhi, Aug. 17 (PTI): State-run power generating firm NTPC Ltd does not have the expertise to manufacture equipments but can partner with strategic players for such a venture, Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde informed the Lok Sabha.
"As on date, NTPC does not have necessary expertise to undertake power equipment manufacturing activities on its own," Shinde said in a written reply.
However, NTPC can partner with a strategic player who can bring the expertise in manufacturing. This, in combination with NTPC's strength in planning, engineering, project management and operational expertise, can be used to develop a viable manufacturing and turnkey contractor, he said.

NTPC, the country's biggest electricity generator, has been asked by the Power Ministry to consider expanding into equipment manufacturing to speed up capacity addition and reduce reliance on Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd, the nation's biggest maker of power equipments. Power Ministry has in the past partially blamed BHEL for the slow pace of addition in generation capacity and failure to achieve 10th plan targets.

In another reply, Shinde said power transmission and distribution losses in the country continued to hover around 35 per cent in the last three years. Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar and Sikkim were the worst performers with losses of 68.25 per cent, 67.46 per cent and 64.45 per cent respectively, he added.
