Gangtok : A four members delegation of the Communist Party of India led by its Sikkim unit president met the Sikkim Police Commissioner, Shri Ravindran, on Thursday and expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in the Capital and the feeling of insecurity currently prevailing among members and supporters of opposition political parties.
The delegation pointed out during the meeting that suppression of free political activities and expression of protests were on the rise and the police had failed to curb these problems as it has not been impartial.
The members of delegations demanded unconditional release of members of Sikkim Pradesh Congress & Sikkim Himali Rajya Parishad who were arrested on by the police on charges of burning the effigies of Sikkim Governor and Chief Minister respectively.
The delegation also asked Police to prove a free corner in the main market areas within Sikkim to enable members of Opposition political parties to freely demonstrate their protests on issues of public interests .
The delegation also presented a memorandum to Mr. Ravindran demanding that the Sikkim Police work with urgency towards alleviating the sense of insecurity currently gripping the Capital and other areas of Sikkim especially among political activists.
For his part, Mr. Ravindran assured the delegation that Sikkim Police would function within the parameters of law of land and will not act with any prejudice towards anyone.
