GANGTOK, August 20: In a gruesome incident, a decomposed body of a young woman was discovered from a house at Middle Sichey here today.
The dead body, as identified by the owner of the house and the local residents, is that of Pritra Maya Tamang (20), wife of Karma Singh Tamang age around 53 to 60 years both residents of Soreng West Sikkim.
The Tamang couples were working as labourers and were staying at the rented house at Middle Sichey.
According to the landlord, the couple was seen in their house till the evening of August 16. The next morning, he saw the house locked from outside and presumed that the couple had gone somewhere.
Two days after, residents of the area detected a foul smell coming from the room, which got unbearable after a while. Suspecting that something was amiss, the landlord peeped in from the house of the house and saw body inside the room. The Police was immediately informed.
A team from Sadar Police broke inside the room and discovered the decomposed body. A synthetic rope measuring about 11 feet was also found wound around the neck of the victim.
An autopsy on the body was conducted and later handed over to the legal guardians.
The landlord, who identified the body to be that of Pritra Maya, said that the couple would often fight and there were several instances when the victim was regularly beaten up by her husband. About three months ago, he husband had physically abused his wife after which the landowner had called the Police and handed him to the Sadar Police Station.
According to the victim’s elder sister, her sister had come to her house very depressed on the evening of August 15. “When I asked her about her problems, she refused to divulge the reason and left for her house,” she said.
Pritra Maya Tamang was married her own maternal uncle couple of years ago when she was about 14 years old. The couple has a four year old daughter.
The victim is the second wife of Karma Singh Tamang. He had left his first wife in Soreng and had abandoned her since 2004.
A case has been registered against the accused Karma Singh Tamang under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code. The case is under investigation. Karma Singh Tamang is absconding.
All Police Stations and Out Posts throughout the State have been alerted and a look-out has been ordered for the accused.
