Government of Sikkim says it is concerned about the Hunger Strikers

GOVT REFUTES OPP ALLEGATION THAT IT IS INDIFFERENT TO ACT SATYAGRAHA

GANGTOK, August 10: The State Government has strongly condemned the allegations made by the Opposition parties that it has not been showing enough concern towards the present situation in the State.
A press release issued by the State Information and Public Relations Department states that the Government has strongly refuted the press release issued by Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee (SPCC) on August 8 which appeared in some of the local newspapers that the State Government is showing no concern to the ongoing strike by the members of Affected Concerns of Teesta (ACT).
Explaining that the State Government has already made numerous appeals to the members of the ACT to call off their hunger strike, the release says that the government has been providing round-the-clock police security besides keeping constant vigil on the health of those who are on hunger strike. All efforts have been made to create a congenial atmosphere to address the apprehension of the concerned people of Dzongu and at least six rounds of meetings were also held between the leaders of the ACT and the high-level Committee of the Government headed by the Chief Secretary. “The sincerity with which the government side is engaged in these discussions to resolve the issue is unfortunately not being reciprocated from the other side, the release clarifies.
Meanwhile, the opposition bereft of any positive issues, the release states are now openly indulging in anti-national activities like burning of effigies of constitutional heads on this issue thereby clearly demonstrating that these vested interests are using the simple and innocent people of Dzongu to satiate their own ulterior motives. The IPR press release also mentions that the chief minister has repeatedly stated about maintaining the sanctity of Dzongu at any cost. “It is well known fact that Sikkim is the most peaceful and stable border State in the country and such propagandas by the opposition will tarnish the good image of the State and its people,” the release adds
