25 Sikkim Congressmen Released

Gangtok: The Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee whose members and supporters were arrested by Sikkim Police suo-moto on Sikkim Governor effigy burning case were released on bail after a court order.

The Session Judge of East & North District Shri S.W. Lepcha ordered the release of 25 congressmen after the expiry of their judicial remand on bail. The Sikkim Congress members and supporters arrested with burning of effigy of Sikkim Governor outside the Congress head office on August4,2007 and charged with rioting, sedition,assaulting a constitutional head and unlawful assembly were released on bail today.
The arrested Congress leaders included Mr T Gyatso, vice president of the Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee and Mr JB Darnal, general secretary of South district. Former chief minister and Sikkim Congress president Mr Nar Bahadur Bhandari has expressed his happiness over the release of the party leaders. Mr Kunga Nima Lepcha, one of the Congress spokespersons, said: “We organised a long victory procession in the town to celebrate the release of the party leaders.” A large number of party leaders and workers greeted them with garlands and khadas .

Earlier, The High court of Sikkim has dismissed two petitions challenging FIRs against Congressmen .
