Gangtok:The capital's run-in with landslides has cornered it from both ends.While the approach to Gangtok is greeted with the rock wall collapse that continue to keep the Indira ByePass closed for traffic. At the other end,The latest Ganesh Tok landslides nearing a week remain active,threatening more residents and causing more hardships.
At latest count,the slides which were activated on July 12 by heavy rain overnight,25 houses have been evacuated in the affected area and power supply to area beyond Chandmari - from Rongyek to Tsomgo-remain disrupted. The landslides have peeled away the base of retaining wall of Ganesh Tok have become bigger with every passing day and threatening areas falling below.The zone do held steady in between. Many families have been shifted to Enchey School hostel, some to Panchayat Prashashan Kendra and relief camp has been established at DoorDarshan Kendra premises as per ADC(East)'s information. More than 20 workers of the Power & Energy Department were busy at work to divert the power cables and to restore supply to areas where it has been cut-off since landslides under the supervision of DE Kishore Gazmer and AE KN Subedi. It would take 5-6 days to restore the supply if weather permits uninterrupted work.
