Gangtok:The areas of the municipalities have been specified by the government by publishing in the gazette notification published on 23rd May but came in light on Saturday. One municipal corporation, four municipality and eight in Nagar panchayat have been announced under the municipality act 2007. The wards of the municipalities are thus: Gangtok municipal corporation will have eleven wards, in municipalities the wards will have accordingly as in Rangpo-7,Singtam-7,Jorehtang Naya bazaar-7,Namchi-7,Pakyong-5,Rhenock-5 Rangoli-5,Geyzing-5,Soreng-5,Rabhangla-5and Mangan-5. According to sub-section(1) and (2) of section 3 of the Sikkim Municipality act 2007, (5 of 2007) which has more than seventy thousand population is declared municipal corporation ,the area which has the population of seventy thousand are declared municipal council and the areas which has five thousand are declared Nagar Panchayt. These municipalities can levy the taxes as per the section 243(g) of the constitution as well as is entitled to get the grant and aid of state and central government. The municipal councilors will have the terms of five years and in the municipality there is the provision of seat reservation for women, schedule tribe and schedule cast as per the constitution of India.
The Government have also released demarcation details through advertisements in local newspapers in its efforts create better awareness among masses.
