Gangtok: The Sikkim government will float fresh tender for the greenfield airport project at Pakyong on a public-private partnership basis.
The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by chief minister Pawan Chamling on Friday.
The cabinet approved the state roads and bridges department's proposal for fresh bid at global and national levels. The department is the nodal body for constructing the airport at Pakyong in East Sikkim, 27 km from here.
The department’s proposal to engage a consultant to frame terms and conditions for the fresh tender was, however, rejected.
Last year the Chamling government had floated tenders seeking public-private partnership. Several companies — including Larsen & Toubro and the Reliance group — had shown interest for the project. Friday’s cabinet meeting also rejected all previous offers.
A detailed project report on the airport has been prepared by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and sent to the Planning Commission.
The status of the project was presented to the Union ministry of development of north eastern region (DoNER) by the state industries and commerce minister R.B. Subba at a North Eastern Council meeting on civil aviation at Aizwal last month.
In the 11th Plan, Rs 960 crore has been allocated for three greenfields airports including the one at Pakyong.
The estimated cost of the Sikkim project is Rs 320 crore. The state government has already been allocated Rs 100 crore by the 12th Finance Commission for this. But if the fund remains unspent till April 2008, it will go back.
The state government is seeking additional funds and the Planning Commission has proposed sharing of cost on 1:1 basis between the ministry of civil aviation and the AAI
