Sikkim Moves On Bamboo Mission

The state government has prioritized the implementation of the National Bamboo Mission and has taken several steps towards this direction in accordance with the national policy initiative.
The proper implementation of the Bamboo Mission in Sikkim is expected to assist in poverty alleviation and employment generation and also to achieve ecological security through plantation of quality species of bamboo through Large Scale Plantations. The other stated objective is to diversify,modernize and expand bamboo based industries particularly handicrafts.
For this cooperative and self help groups will be encouraged through modern technology and financial support.
It is informed that two thirds of the bamboo stock is in the northeast which is mostly used for utensils, farm tools, shelter, fences, bridges, water pipes.
The mission’s programmes on research,plantation development, handicrafts development and marketing will be specific to the state for which the Horticulture and Cash Crop Development Department as Nodal Department for implementation of Bamboo Mission.
