
Gangtok, Apr 10: More than 1000 tourists, who were stranded following a landslide at eighth mile on Jawahar Lal Nehru road, about 13 km north from here, have been evacuated.The tourists were returning to Gangtok after visiting Tsomgo lake, a popular tourist spot.Sources here said the landslide occurred at around 1400 hours yesterday following heavy rain and hailstorms for the last few days.About 150 metre stretch of the J N Road was covered with debris following the landslide and brought the traffic to a halt. More than 180 vehicles carrying the tourists were stranded.Sikkim Police in cooperation with the Travel Agents Association of Sikkim, the J N Road Drivers Association and the local people launched the rescue operation.It took four hours to evacuate the tourists, police sources here said.
