GOVERNOR EVALUATES FUNDS UTILISATION AND PANCHAYAT ACTIVITIES DOWN SOUTH

NAMCHI, April 09: The Governor of Sikkim V Rama Rao concluded his visit to 45 Gram Panchayat Units (GPU) in the South district that reportedly came with healthy interaction with the Panchayat members, Rural Development Assistants (RDAs), Self Help Groups (SHGs), Line Department Officials and the people at large.

The Governors on 4 April visited 45 Borong-Phamtam GPU, 44 Ralang-Namlung GPU, and 40 Lamaten-Tingmo GPU. On 5 April, he visited 38 Sangaath GPU, 39 Tinkitam-Rayong GPU and Ben-Namphrik GPU, where the Governor was received with a warm welcome.

Rao enquired on the activities concerning Gram Sabha and Panchayat meetings, the role of Panchayats and RDAs in the village development. He asked about Micro Plan Fund, how it is being utilised for the village progression and the ongoing works under the Micro Plan.

He also met Chief Minister’s Rojgar Yojana (CMRY) beneficiaries and enquired about the utilisation of the loans. He said that the beneficiaries should repay the loan to the government, if they are capable so that the others, who are in need could avail the same.

The Governor was also presented with the village profile with all the details of each GPUs. He asked the RDAs and the Panchayat members to have basic knowledge of the Panchayat Rules & Act and apply the same while carrying out their functioning.

During the GPU visits, the Governor also visited the M/s Borong Polok Handmade Paper Industry Private Limited, where he was shown the process of paper manufacturing and the plant ‘Daphne Spp’ (Argeli) from which the paper raw material is extracted.

Thereafter, he stopped by the Palchen Choling Gonpa in Ralang, where he met Gyaltshap Rinpoche and had a short interaction with him. Gyaltshap Rinpoche showed the Governor the indoors of the Gonpa and gave a brief explanation on the beautiful interior paintings and on behalf on the Monastery, he also put up a request to the Governor on land requisition for ‘SHEDA’ (Monastic School). The Gyaltshap Rinpoche presented the Governor with souvenirs.

A small cultural programme was held in Ben-Namphrik GPU to mark the Governor’s farewell, wherein District Collector (South), D Anandan on behalf of the official and local gentry of South district handed the Governor V Rama Rao a memento.

The Governor was accompanied by First Lady Vasantha Kumari, L Dorjee, Special Secretary to the Governor, SK Verma, Superintendent of Police (South), Dinesh Bhutia, District Development Officer (South), LB Das, Sub Divisional Magistrate, Ravangla, BM Rai, South District Zilla Panchayat Upa-Adakshaya and other line department officials.

GANGTOK, April 09: Four years after placing the foundation stone, Sri Sathya Sai Sarva Dharma Kendra in Daramdin now stands complete and elegant over half an acre land in the company of picturesque valleys of West Sikkim.

Inauguration of the Sri Sathya Sai Sarva Dharma Kendra is scheduled on 15 April from the hands of the Chief Minister Pawan Chamling at Daramdin in West Sikkim – foundation stone of which was laid by the Chief Minister himself on 3 March 2003.

In a press meet held toady at Hotel Mayur, fraternity members and forerunner of Sai committee, including area MLA, Daramdin RB Subba, along with General Secretary Kiran Rasaily, architect RK Pradhan, District President to Sikkim Sai Samiti Passang Sherpa informed the newly built temple is built in cohesion with all the religions, carved and sculptured beautifully and put under one roof.

Considering the state-of-art construction as a brainchild of the Chief Minister, the temple is designed by architect Kiran Rasaily withstanding total cost of Rs 5 Crores. The successful construction of the temple is also reported of owing its credit to all Sai devotees and different trusts as Sri Satya Sai Seva Samiti and Sri Satya Sai State Trust of Sikkim, along with the three families – Kedarnath and Rizal family, Mohan and Pradhan family and Illa Hang Subba family, who volunteered the land for the noble cause.

RABONG FEST CONTINUES WITH FASHION & CULTURAL PERFORMANCES

The money collected on the first day at the gate, that was Rs 10 per head, was informed to be donated to the National School for Blind, Namchi by the Rabong Tourism Development Committee. Likewise, the collection made during the semi final of Swar Sikkim at Denzong Cinema Hall in Gangtok was informed to be donated to ASHI, a rehabilitation center at Gangtok

RAVANGLA, April 09: The second day of ‘Rabong Discovered’ saw a vibrant musical night with an extravagant fashion show by models from premier fashion school National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Kolkata. Traditional attires with fusion outfits came as the main theme of the fashion show.

The festival tonight witnessed Minister for Agriculture and Horticulture Somnath Poudyal as the chief guest. Likewise the first, the subsequent day was also supplemented with various cultural presentations made by artists and students from different schools.

Speaking on his part, Somnath Poudyal remarked the event a “magnificent platform” in manifesting one’s culture, tradition and custom. Greeting Minister DD Bhutia as the mastermind behind organising Rabong tourist festival, Poudyal remarked the endeavour as a unique initiative of tourism development in Sikkim.

CORPORATION STAFF DETAINED AGAINST CASH MISAPPROPRIATION

GANGTOK, April 09: A case of fraud with Sikkim Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes Development Corporation Limited, Gangtok was registered against a peon of the same corporation, Subash Gurung (29) resident of Pani House, Gangtok at the Sadar Police Station.

According to the police, accused Subash Gurung was working with Sikkim Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backwards Classes Development Limited, Gangtok on the capacity of peon and misappropriated a sum of Rs 2,50,260 collected from loaners for depositing in the State Bank of Sikkim at Secretariat Branch.

The Sadar Police arrested the accused Subash Gurung following a complaint from CS Rai, Manager to Sikkim Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes Development Corporation Limited. The case was thus registered under Section 408 (against criminal breach of trusty by clerk or servant) of the Indian Penal Code. The accused being presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate East/ North, Gangtok was sentenced to 5 days police remand.

MINOR COMMITS SUICIDE

SORENG, April 09: A minor girl of Soreng, West district committed suicide on the night of 6 April by hanging from a tree in a jungle close by her residence. The case was registered at the Soreng Police Station following informations from Karna Bahadur Rai of Dodak in Soreng on 7 April.

Reports reveal that on the evening of 6 April, the deceased left her home for her uncle’s place in the vicinity for watching television, but did not return home, to which her parents presumed of her staying back at her uncle’s place for the night. Early next morning one Man Bahadur Rai identified the 14 year old deceased hanging in a nearby jungle some 300 feet above the ground.

Later the body of the deceased was recovered and sent to Namchi Hospital for autopsy, thereafter handed over to her parents. The case was registered under Section 174 of Criminal Procedure and investigations are on.
