Baalu calls upon states to implement e-governance in transport
COIMBATORE: Stating that a sum of Rs 2,27,258 crore would be spent in a phased manner for developing the National Highways for the period 2005-2012, Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T R Baalu has urged the state governments to provide as much land as possible to improve infrastructure.He was delivering the inaugural address at the 10th meeting of the National Road Safety Council here on Saturday.In the event being organised in Tamil Nadu for the first time, the delegates from places across the country, including Transport Ministers of various states - Chandra Brahma (Assam), Mathew T Thomas (Kerala), Jayanarayan Mishra (Orissa), Menlom Lepcha (Sikkim), Subash Chakraborty (West Bengal) and Imtilemba Sangtam (Nagaland) - participated.On road accidents, Baalu said in India, every one minute there is an accident happening, while every six minutes there is a fatal one and nearly 260 people die everyday. A total of 4,40,000 accidents were reported in 2006 and 94,900 people were killed, he pointed out.Baalu said 80 percent of the accidents are due to the fault of the drivers.
