MAKHA, April 22: The three day long ‘Worship of Mother Earth and Sikkim’s Traditional Wild Foods Tourist Festival 2007’ came to a close today afternoon at Makha bazaar with the Minister for Tourism RB Subba as the chief guest.
The festival featuring 84 traditional wild foods, exhibition cum sale of decorative accessories of clay and bamboo, also brought forward traditional ornaments made by students of Raley Junior High School, wide display of departmental stalls and Self Help Groups including the traditional houses of the trio ethnic communities, Bhutia, Lepcha and Nepali and traditional pujas conducted by lamas, zhakris and boongthing attracted hosts of visitors from around the state.
One of the highlights at today’s valedictory function was felicitation to people aged 80 years and above with abhinandan patra and shawl by the chief guest together with cultural dances and songs performed by the local groups of Makha at the venue of Makha bazaar.
Speaking at the occasion, the Tourism Minister appreciated the organising committee for having organised tourist festivals of such kind, which according to him would definitely go a long way for promotion of tourism in the region. “Despite the fact that Sikkim is a state that can boast of rich natural resources in terms of forests, mountains, lakes etc, the same festival has acted as a requisite platform to showcase such bounties of nature”, Subba added.
Subba during the course of his deliberations also highlighted the visionary approach of the Chief Minister towards making the youths of the region self-reliant in all of their present and future endevaours. Earlier the area MLA for Rakdong-Tintek constituency Norzang Lepcha in his deliberations emphasised on the huge potential of Makha to promote tourism in the state.
