RANGPO, August 23: With the Mile 27 stretch along the National Highway 31-A still under landslide debris, commuters from Sikkim travelling to and fro Siliguri have been taking around nine hours to reach their destinations.
At least 10 places along the Highway had been hit by landslides, triggered by torrential rains over the past week. All these stretches, except Mile 27 area near Rambi have been cleared by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).
The NHPC, who is undertaking the construction of the Teesta Lower Dam at Mile 27, has also come under public criticism for distancing themselves from restoration work and for failing to bring about permanent solution to the recurring landslide problem at this stretch.
The NHPC authorities, on the other hand, have been saying that restoration works are on at this stretch, which comes directly above the dam site.
