KAZI SAHIB'S FINAL JOURNEY

MORTAL REMAINS OF FORMER CM KEPT AT RUMTEK MONASTERY; FUNERAL ON AUG 3

Gangtok: The mortal remains of Sikkim’s first Chief Minister, Kazi Lhendup Dorjee Khangsarpa was brought to the Rumtek Monastery today.
The final journey of Kazi Sahib began this morning from Chakung House in Kalimpong, his home for the last three decades or so. A large number of people, including officials from the Sikkim Government and members of Kazi Sahib’s extended family escorted his mortal remains as it made its way from Kalimpong to Rumtek.
People stopped the motorcade at various places along the Kalimpong-Rumtek route to pay their last respect to the departed statesman.
People from South and West Districts paid their homage at Melli where thousands of morners offered khadas to the mortal remains of late Kazi Sahib.
A huge congregation of people with khadas in their hands had gathered at Rangpo to pay their last respects to the first Chief Minister of Sikkim. The elderly, who fondly remembered Kazi Sahib, waited with moist eyes tears, at Rangpo check post. Prayers were being offered to the departed soul with the elderly chanting “Maneys” and spinning prayers wheels.
The procession was received by the Advisor to the Chief Minister BB Gooroong, Minister for Agriculture Somnath Poudyal, Director General of Police C Ravindran, officials, Police personals and the locals at Rangpo Tourist Centre, where they offered khadas to the casket bearing the mortal remains of late Kazi Sahib.
SP East, S Tuli, SDPO Rangpo, Sonam Bhutia, members from business community, members of civil defence, Lion Club of Rangpo, Youth, Panchayat members were also present. The casket was wrapped in the national flag. The Rangpo Bazaar was closed for a half day to pay homage to the departed leader.
The Sikkim Police offered a gun salute in honour of Kazi Sahib at the Rangpo Tourist Centre premises. The casket was kept here for almost an hour for the people to pay their respects.
In Ranipool, Lok Sabha MP, Nakul Das Rai, received the motorcade.
Around 3.30 pm in the afternoon, the motorcade arrived at the old Rumtek Monastery, where the casket will be kept for a day. The funeral, with full State honours, will be held on Friday, August 3. The State Government has declared a State holiday on August 3. The Chief Minister along with his Cabinet colleagues and members of Sikkim Legislative Assembly will attend the funeral ceremonies.
