Indian Idol 3 : Girls Vs Boys

Pooja,Ankita,Deepali in Sony’s Indian Idol have made it to the final rungs just as public voting reaches the last phase to crystal out that one crooner who will be the best in India.
The question is, and more so for the Indian Idol contest — will it be a girl this year? Publicity head of Sony Shola Ramchandran, who accompanied the seven Indian Idol finalists to Lucknow on Monday for a concert, has an interesting theory why girls don’t win. “The unfortunate thing is that girls among viewers tend to vote for boys and boys naturally vote for boys. So even if a girl has performed well, she is outranked by a boy on the basis of votes. But we desperately hope the Idol is a girl this year as that will encourage many deserving candidates to come forward and audition.”

After the Friendship Day’s celebrations on Sunday, the mood in the Idol camp is upbeat. There is an easy camaraderie between the seven finalists as they get ready for one last concert before they face the final elimination round which marks the countdown to this year’s Indian Idol. Contestant Pooja from Dhanbad prefers to be diplomatic saying that the best candidate should win. Patna’s Deepali is of the opinion that a female winner will do a world of good to the hopes of singers from small towns. She said, “We’ve had two male Indian Idols. I think it is time a woman won it.”
Pooja is quick in denying that any special considerations have been meted out this year to contestants from small towns. She said, “Every participant has undergone rigorous training and riyaz to be able to reach where they have.” However, this year, apart from a couple from Kolkata, most have come up from the hinterlands of India — Dhanbad’s Pooja, Darjeeling’s Prashant, Shillong’s Amit, Kanpur’s Ankita and Patna’s Deepali. They are all spoiling for a good fight.
The Idol stars gave a scintillating open-air performance at the packed Saharaganj Mall on Monday evening issuing a fervent appeal to the public to vote generously for their favourites. May the best man, or woman, win!!
