A fun tale of intrigue and drama

Doctors rule out existence of such spirits, terms it as a kind of hallucination

Gangtok:It is very weird, it is very bizarre. After Gyalshing and Singtam, this phenomenon has now become the talk of the town.
The hearsay which came in from places like Ranipool, Tadong, 6th Mile, and Arithang created diversified opinions on the topic.

A tale of intrigue and drama is supposed to be doing round in Gangtok which most of us have heard and talked about since last Thursday but could not be anything more that just a crazy and baseless rumour. The tale is about a 'CHUDEL' has come to Gangtok from West Sikkim who knocks at the door of a house and ask whosoever answer the call for onion and garlic and if he or she refuses to give it than as a curse that person dies.

This tale has taken a sort of mass hysteria in Gangtok where one can witness even the most literate and well placed people do not mind further spreading it to their friends or relatives.the people started scribbling OM on their doors with cow dung. “It will prevent your from the evil spirits. Seeing Om written on the main door, the evil spirits dare not enter one’s house”, quipped Uma Devi of Tadong Bazaar. She, along with her neighbours, has already written Om on the main doors of their houses.

Many houses and residents in Gangtok have take protection measures by using yellow mustard& turmeric, and many other 'blessed' protections from the evils.

“If there is good spirit, why can’t there be evil spirit. Of course, this can happen,” said HB Chettri firmly believing that these kinds of spirit do exist in the world.
Following the news AB Karki, SDM Gangtok visited the places early this morning and interacted with the people assuring them not to panic. “We don’t want any kind of problems to be created so a strict vigil is kept against those people who are spreading these kinds of rumours creating panic amongst the people”, the SDM informed.
The administration has strictly appealed the people not to be get carried away by these rumours.
Interestingly, most of the shopkeepers in Arithang have stopped responding the late night knocks after 10pm in their shops.
Stating it as a kind of hallucination, Dr IL Sharma, Psychiatrist of STNM Hospital straightaway ruled out the existence of any kind of such sprits. “It is a hallucination and a state of a mind where one perceives the rumours to be true,” he said.

There cannot be any reality in mass rumour that is being circulated as Sikkim is a place of religious significance and spreads with many holy lakes and have many monasteries, temples and churches and people here are religious and god fearing by nature,a Gangtokian commented .

People have appealed to Gangtok's people to not to spread these rumours as it have no scientific evidence or any proof whatsoever.
