Sikkim Education Policy earns Opp flak

GANGTOK: The leaders of the Sikkim Himali Rajya Parishad (SHRP), a regional Opposition party of the state, have criticised the government’s education policy. Terming the recent Medical Council of India (MCI) affiliation to the Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS) as illegal, Dr AD Subba, the president of the SHRP, said: “The affiliation was made without the President of India’s recommendation. So it is illegal.” Mr subha said that the state government’s political game has put a question mark on the fate of the SMIMS students. “The students would face difficulties after passing out from the institute,” Dr Subba, added. He said it was unfortunate that despite being a state, Sikkim still does not have a university of its own. The party also criticised the state’s school education system. “ Science subjects are neglected owing to lack of infrastructure. The state government is not taking any initiative to introduce job-oriented courses. In this era of globalisation when technologies hold the key, the state is lagging behind in terms of modern education from other parts of the country,” Dr Subba, said. He alleged that the state government has not properly implemented the Centre’s Sarba Siksha Abhiyan project in the state. “If the government really wants to implement quality education in the state, the entire administrative system has to be changed in a proper manner,” Dr Subba, suggested
