Black Cat Sikkim On Green Mission before Games

Gangtok:The Black Cat Division of the army has launched a week-long programme of tree planting in Sikkim.
Under the programme, a number of saplings were planted at military bases in Gangtok, Pamteng, Nathula, Kupup, Sherwani, Burdong, Lachen, Thanggu and Lachung. Poplar tree saplings were brought all the way from Food Research Laboratory in Leh and planted at Kupup.
The campaign was part of the Trishakti Corps’s drive for greening the region that was launched on July 8, 2007.
It was carried out as a prelude to the World Military Games scheduled in Hyderabad and Mumbai in October this year.
The tree plantation programme saw students of army school in Gangtok plant herbal saplings in their institution with the message — Good Health for One and All. “Mother Nature is our saviour and we need to propagate herbs for health,” said a young student when asked about the campaign.
A number of ecology parks have also been set up at 5th Mile, Lachung, Dombang, old and new cantonments in Gangtok.
The army has also constructed green houses not only in Gangtok, but in high altitude areas like Thegu as well. The construction of another green house in Thanggu is under progress and six more are being planned.
The endeavour of this project is two-fold: first, to add value to the quality of life for border area residents and second, to provide a means of subsistence to the local populace.
In a similar programme, the Kripan Division has also planted about 8,000 saplings in the Dooars region.
