Siliguri poultry farm epidemic not bird flu: Lab report

SILIGURI, MAY 14 :The cause of death of around 2,500 chickens at a local poultry farm was not bird flu, a testing laboratory in Bhopal, the only authorised one in the country to detect the presence of the avian disease, has said.
Siliguri Sub-judicial Officer P T Sherpa told PTI today that after conducting tests on samples, the Bhopal laboratory found them to be negative for bird flu.
The deaths had caused panic in this commercial town, a centre for supply of chicken to Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan and the entire Darjeeling Hills besides local markets.
The administration, which had taken precautionary measures restricting the entry and exit of poultry from the farm, Raj Aziz Poultry Farm at Matigara, about four km from here and also set up a police picket, would review the situation tonight following the negative report from the Bhopal lab, Sherpa said.
The Animal Husbandary Department laboratory in Kolkata would now conduct tests to find out the cause of the death of the chickens, he added.
