Sikkim Government gets first woman driver

GANGTOK, 28 June: Rajeshwari Rai has become the first lady to be appointed a driver in the State government service. She will be serving the Department of Forests Environment and Wildlife Management.
The final list of 10 selected candidates was put up on the notice board of the Forest Secretariat today.
Earlier, on 04 May, a total of 32 candidates had taken the viva-voce, among whom, Ms. Rai as was the lone woman.
Ms. Rai, a graduate, had to gone through the same screening as her male counterparts, which included, driving a Mahindra Pickup Utility on a congested road and driving a Marshall DI Turbo in reverse gear up a steep slope during her driving test after successfully passing the written examination.
She is scheduled to sign a memorandum with the Department along with the other nine drivers at the Forest Secretariat on Wednesday.
Similarly, five more women candidates have made to the final list for the 10 posts of peons in the same Department.
