Lepchas call off march to Dzongu in Sikkim

Gangtok, Nov 19 (PTI) The three-day march to north Sikkim's Dzongu by Lepchas from Darjeeling was called off today after restrictions were imposed on them by the district authorities, a spokesman of the organisers Indigenous Lepcha Tribal Association (ILTA) said.

The ILTA decided to call off the march to the Lepcha 'motherland' after it was communicated by the north Sikkim district administration that not more than 10 people will be allowed to visit Dzongu to pay religious obeisance, he said.

The administration had cited law and order problems at Dzongu due to assembly of a large number of people from outside, the spokesman said, adding the decision to call off the march was taken in the larger public interest.
