Fake currencies seized in Jorethang




Jorethang, October 5: Two persons in Jorethang, South Sikkim have been arrested by police and fake currencies amounting to Rs. 5,500 were recovered from them.
SP (South), GK Verma said that police yesterday first arrested Aftab Alam (31) from Majigaon, Jorethang after 11 counterfeit notes of Rs. 500 denominations were recovered from his possession.
After the arrest, it was revealed that the accused had procured these fake notes from outside the State, said Mr. Verma.
The accused had allegedly purchased fake currencies amounting to Rs. 10,000 at 50 percent less the value of original notes. The accused is a tailor by profession.
Sources informed that Alam had used more than Rs. 4000 of the fake notes in Siilguri after purchasing the counterfeit notes.
Police later also arrested another Jorethang resident Dhan Kumar Shah, a petty businessman, in connection with the case.
A case under section 489 IPC has been registered against the duo. They were produced before the Judicial Magistrate at Namchi today and were sent to a police remand for five days
