7 Govt buildings rot away awaiting inauguration

GANGTOK, October 5: Seven spacious government buildings including those meant for landless people at Lower Lingding, Gangtok is gathering moss even after seven years of completion.

Reflecting a vulgar waste of public money, the empty rooms of these buildings shout for its formal inauguration and to get operational and serve the purpose for which they were built on huge budgets.

According to the locals, the buildings were constructed by the State Urban Development & Housing department seven years ago and were meant to be as allotment for the landless Sikkimese people. No allotments were given and later a school building, dispensary and a community hall were added which are also lying unused, they said.

The buildings have an accommodation facility for 70 families, it is claimed.

Lying idle, the conditions of these buildings are deteriorating.

State BJP vice president Padam Chettri told reporters that that such unused infrastructure is a useless expenditure of public revenue by the State government. He demanded that the State Vigilance department should intervene and launch a probe behind the non-use of the government buildings at Lower Lingding.

Stating that the many people are living with a proper roof over their heads, Mr. Chettri said that the rooms of the buildings be allotted to them. He also claimed that the Centre has provided ample funds in crores to Sikkim for construction of houses to poor people. These funds have not been properly utilized, he said.
